The 100 Best Pizzerias in the World, According to a New Ranking

Anthony Mangieri’s Una Pizza Napoletana may be the best pizzeria in the United States, but it no longer has the honor of being the best in the world.

An organization that ranks the best pies across the globe, 50 top Pizza, announced its 2023 list last night, handing out the top spot to I Masanielli in Caserta and 10 Diego Vitagliano Pizzeria in Naples. The former, owned by Francesco Martucci, maintained its perch from last year, while 10 Diego Vitagliano moved up from the No. 5 spot. Mangieri’s stateside pie shop fell down to No. 2.

“Throughout this year, in which we held awards ceremonies in Barcelona, Tokyo, New York, and Rome, we witnessed a continual rise in pizza quality,” the ranking’s curators said in a statement. “In 2023, our guide features over 2,000 venues, ranging from independent pizzerias to artisan pizza chains. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our diligent inspectors who traveled the world, expanding our map of excellent pizza destinations.”

In total, New York, Naples, and Rome topped the list with five pizzerias each. Tokyo, London, Milan, and Caserta each saw four spots make the grade, while São Paulo and Copenhagen had three eateries given the honor.

The top five was rounded out by Rafa Panatieri and Jorge Sastre’s Sartoria Panatieri in Barcelona, Daniele Cason’s the Pizza Bar on 38th in Tokyo and Simone Padoan’s I Tigli in San Bonifacio. Sartoria Panatieri moved up an impressive amount, from No. 21 last year. The Pizza Bar on 38th also rose quite a bit, from No. 16, and I Tigli jumped just one spot, from No. 6.

In terms of American pie shops, the next highest entrant is Razza Pizza Artigianale in Jersey City at No. 11, followed by Ken’s Artisan Pizza in Portland at No. 18. In all, 14 U.S. pizzerias appear in the ranking. And thankfully 50 Top Pizza released its list of the best establishments in the States earlier this year, for anyone who has a hankering in a city not covered by the worldwide ranking.
