The 10 Worst Yogurts You Can Buy, Based on Sugar—And What to Buy Instead

Walk down the yogurt aisle at the grocery store, and there are more options than you can easily count. Behind the containers of plain, traditional yogurts and unflavored, creamy Greek yogurts are some less-than-healthy options we’re not big fans of.

Don’t get us wrong—we love yogurt. It’s full of probiotics and can even lower your risk of heart attack and stroke. But many of the store offerings are more of a dessert than healthy snack. Here, we checked out the nutrition on some top yogurt brands to find the most unhealthy picks, based on sugar content—and found healthy alternatives you should pick up instead.

Yoplait Mix-Ins Coconut Chocolate Almond

We’re big fans of the totally recognizable ingredients in this yogurt, but the 22 grams of sugar is way too high.

Try This: Toss a few dark chocolate chips, dried coconut flakes, and roasted almonds into plain yogurt (such as Yoplait's plain) to get the same flavor—without all the added sugar.

Wallaby Aussie Greek Honey

Even though this label reads just two healthy ingredients—low fat organic milk and organic honey—one container of the probiotic-packed yogurt has 28 grams of sugar.

Try This: Take a half cup of Wallaby Aussie plain and just add a half teaspoon of honey and dash of cinnamon.

Yoplait Whips Peanut Butter Chocolate Girl Scouts

Of the three girl scout flavors, peanut butter chocolate is the worst as far as sugar goes. There are 22 grams of sugar per container, which is crazy, considering that two real cookies have only 8 grams of sugar.

Try This: Yoplait's Greek 100 line has a variety of sweet flavors all for around 7 grams of sugar.

Fage Split Cup Honey

These split cups toss in way too much sugar for our liking—just one container contains 29 grams of sugar, plus a whopping 210 calories.

Try This: Opt for the other flavors like this Strawberry Split Cup which only has 11 grams of sugar per serving.

Chobani Flip Peanut Butter Dream

Before you dig into this yogurt cup, you should know that it’s advertised as an indulgent treat. Just one container is 210 calories and has 22 grams of sugar, which is high (but significantly better for you than a half cup of Ben and Jerry’s Peanut Butter Cup ice cream).

Try This: Chobani's Flip Classics are much lower in sugar. Try the Apple Crisp Twist which has just 14 grams of sugar.

Noosa Caramel Chocolate Pecan

At 250 calories and 27 grams of sugar per container, we’re going to pass on the chocolate, sugar-coated pecans, and pretzel combo. If that wasn’t enough, the yogurt itself is infused with cane sugar, sweetened condensed milk, and caramel color. No thanks.

Try This: If you really crave that sweet treat, Noosa's Salted Caramel shaves 10g of sugar off that, and only has 140 calories.

Dannon Fruit on the Bottom

Most of Dannon’s fruit on the bottom yogurts (strawberry, peach, cherry, raspberry, and strawberry banana) hit 22 grams of sugar per container.

Try This: Add ? cup fresh strawberries to their nonfat plain yogurt for less sugar.

Raspberry Lemonade Noosa

These seem perfectly harmless at just 18 grams of sugar per container, but we noticed these bright pink cups were significantly smaller than a normal 5 to 5.5 ounce container. After a little number crunching, we discovered this yogurt would have closer to 24 grams of sugar if it was the same size as the competitors.

Try This: Add your own topping to their plain flavor — like raspberries, lemon juice, and a little honey.

Dannon Lowfat Yogurt Coffee Flavor

The low-fat halo doesn't keep the tiny cup from containing 22 grams of sugar.

Try This: Swap the coffee and vanilla flavors out for Dannon's plain yogurt, then add low-sugar flavors such as a touch of vanilla extract.

Fage Crossovers Coconut with Dark Chocolate

Advertised as a snack, some of these Fage crossovers are a little sugar-heavy for a mid-day treat. The coconut with dark chocolate variety packs on about 23 grams of sugar for the single container.

Try This: The Maple Syrup with Granola Crossover comes out significantly lower with just 13g of sugar for the same delicious experience.
