Lonesome Dove
This 1989 miniseries is an adaptation of Larry McMurtry's acclaimed novel of the same name. Starring the like of Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Diane Lane, and Danny Glover, it's something of a spiritual forebear to 1883, telling the tale of a duo of former Texas Rangers turned ranchers as they attempt to drive a herd of cattle from Texas to Montana.
Warrior
In 1883, Sam Elliott's Shea is making for the West Coast, but this action-packed drama is already set there. Based on an original story by martial arts legend Bruce Lee, it tracks Ah Sahm, a Chinese immigrant in 1870s San Francisco who goes in search of his long-lost sister and along the way becomes a leader in an organized crime family.
