The Most Comfortable Couches You Can Buy Online, According to Design Pros

At House Beautiful, we're on a mission to find you the most comfortable couch on the market. In addition to our expertise, we turned to Lindye Galloway, founder and chief creative officer of Lindye Galloway Studio + Shop, and Andrew Gillick, founder and principal designer of Concordia Design for all their advice on how to find the living room seating of your dreams. "The most comfortable dimensions of a sofa—specifically depth—and will be different for everyone," Gillick tells House Beautiful. "Just think about how varied everyone's favorite seating position is, not to mention different body types and sizes."

What to Look for When Buying Comfortable Couches:

Equally as key are a few other factors, so let's dive in, shall we?

The Right Fabric

"My motto is let life live," Galloway shares. "I have two kids and a cat, I love embracing the mess and beauty of it all. Just remember to choose a high-performance fabric when you have children or pets running around. Your home has to be a place you feel comfortable in, it's not just about perfection and photo-worthy design."

A Sturdy Frame

The frame quite literally holds the sofa together, so Gillick recommends "looking for a frame that is constructed of kiln-dried wood [to prevent warping]." If you want your luxury sofa to last, avoid a construction that doesn't employ cheaply manufactured techniques like stapling. "Investing in a piece with a superior quality frame will ensure that your sofa will outlive you...and your children," he adds.

Hand-Tied Springs

"The most comfortable sofas have hand-tied springs so that the maker can ensure the piece feels balanced, some of the most exclusive upholstery firms still use the 'old school' method of padding the frame and springs with horsehair," according to Gillick. You don't necessarily need to find the fanciest and most niche springs, but opting for well-made sofas with sturdy inner workings is key.

Cozy Cushions

When it comes to the cushions, this is a bit more personal. While some people like a sink-in feel, others prefer something a bit firmer. Or you can always go with a down that's wrapped in something else (like fiber) to prevent constant upkeep."I always prefer a high-density foam core wrapped with down feathers," Gillick admits. "Down cushioning provides the plushest feel for the sitter but can be a nuisance in that the cushions will need to be regularly plumped to maintain their shape."

Beach House Chaise Sectional

West Elm is one of those super reliable brands. You can trust that, even without testing it in person, it will arrive exactly as the website promises. Case in point: This sofa, which is just as comfortable as it looks. One thing we will say, though, is that the cushions aren't sink-in soft. They're a bit overstuffed, which we'd consider a good thing, but it makes for a firmer seat. If you like to sit on pillowy soft sofas, this may not be the one for you. Otherwise, grab it in four sizes and more than 100 fabrics. Did we mention that it includes free white glove delivery?

Mainstays Memory Foam Futon

Not all of the most comfortable couches need thick, plush cushions. In fact, some of the most cozy feature thinner cushions. The secret? Memory foam, which you'd recognize from some luxurious mattresses and pillows. This fabulous find is a sofa by day and a fold-down futon by night. Because it's memory foam, it's just as comfortable. That said, it's not exactly built for the very tall because it's only six feet wide. For context, most twin beds are only three inches longer.

Kahli Sofa

Frontgate has a ton of sofas, but our favorite is the Kahli, which boasts a simple silhouette, rolled arms, and a low-profile frame. It comes in 100 fabrics, so unless you're looking for something with a unique shape (think round), this will work in your space. "Whatever you decide, sofas and beds are the two most important pieces of furniture in your home. Invest in the best sofa you can possibly afford and it can stay with you for life," Gillick says. "It's also much better for the environment to invest once and simply recover to suit changing tastes and trends. Do not cut corners on a sofa to splurge elsewhere! You will absolutely regret it." Basically, don't buy a cheap sofa that you'll have to replace in a year.
