10 Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds That Won’t Make You Sneeze

The good news: You’re finally ready (emotionally, financially, spatially) to get a dog. The bad news: Your family is allergic. But that doesn’t mean that Myrtle the Turtle has to be your only option. Instead, consider one of these hypoallergenic dog breeds to help avoid those pesky symptoms. (Itching, sneezing, runny eyes? Woof.) While the American Kennel Club says there’s no such thing as a completely allergy-free dog, there are a few breeds that are less likely to cause a reaction. That’s because they shed significantly less than other dogs, therefore producing less dander (the main cause of pet allergies in humans). Here, ten adorable pups for allergy sufferers.

1. Yorkshire Terrier

Although these tiny pups don’t shed or produce much dander, you do need to brush their coat every day to keep it tangle-free and healthy. (They won’t mind, trust us.) Yorkies also make ideal city dogs since—because of their size—they often get plenty of exercise indoors.

2. Poodle

Toy, miniature or standard—all sizes of this super-smart breed are hypoallergenic (and so pretty). Easy to train, poodles are highly adept at learning commands and are great with families. Beauty and brains.

3. Spanish Water Dog

In the doggy yearbook, this happy breed would win class clown. Lively and outgoing, they’re also devoted family members, and despite their thick fur, they actually shed little to no hair.

4. Portuguese Water Dog

It’s no coincidence that the Obamas chose this friendly breed for the White House—Malia has allergies. In addition to being hypoallergenic, these guys are also known for being highly intelligent, protective and brave.

5. Shih Tzu

Classic lap dogs, these spunky pooches don’t shed very much but do require daily brushing to keep their fur healthy. Their small to medium size means they’re also perfect for cozier homes or apartments (but their mischievous nature means you’ll want to keep your shoes tucked away).

6. Chinese Crested

Non-barking, friendly and playful, these pups are also non-shedding and odorless. They’re great with kids; although, they can be a little clingy so make sure to give them lots of cuddles and attention.

7. Bichon Frise

These loving and intelligent guys are known as powder-puff dogs because, well, look at ’em. Just know: You’ll have to brush their white coat daily to keep it healthy and perfectly poof-ed.

8. Schnauzer

A high-energy breed, these sociable pups are known for their playfulness and and devotion (and their adorable mustaches, of course).

9. Bedlington Terrier

With their woolly, lamb-like coats, it’s no surprise that these guys shed so little. They’re also affectionate and mild-mannered, making them a great addition to children and other pets.

10. Maltese

Easygoing and obedient, these canines are stronger than they look (meaning they can keep up with larger breeds). Although they’re typically easy to train, Maltese can be difficult to housebreak. (Remember this adorable face when you’re breaking out the Spot Shot.)
