10 Fantastic Reasons To Adopt an Older Dog for Senior Dog Week

Senior Dog Week is October 23-29 and the national senior dog awareness program, Saving Senior Dogs USA, goal is to raise awareness about the plight of elderly homeless dogs across the United States.

Approximately 350,000 shelter dogs are euthanized in the U.S. every year, and older dogs are less likely to be adopted than puppies or younger dogs. But there are so many fantastic reasons to give a senior a home, and here are just ten of them.

Sure, puppies are absolutely adorable but you know what isn't adorable? Older dogs have usually outgrown this behavior.

Amelia Martin/Shutterstock

If you are interested in making a donation to Saving Senior Dogs USA, you can visit their website here. Seventy-five percent of the funds raised during Saving Senior Dogs Week, as well as those donations that come in throughout the year, are divided equally among their member rescues. Twenty-five percent of the funds go into a grant fund to help their member rescues with medical expenses for the dogs they rescue.

If you are interested in adopting an elderly dog, please contact your local animal shelter or Humane Society to see dogs available for adoption.
