It’s always fascinating to learn how HGTV stars got to where they are now. In Sherrod and Jackson’s case, the avenue was pretty direct: They pitched their own show. The idea was born during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sherrod explained to HGTV: “Being sort of shut in together, and we’re both running our respective businesses from the kitchen counter, and we have our kids in virtual school at the other end. It was a little bit of a zoo here, but we were getting it done, and then Mike said, ‘Well, let’s film this.’ And we started making people laugh on social media with our daily shenanigans—trying to work and balance home life. Our management said, ‘Y’all really have something here, you should shoot a sizzle reel.’ So we did that and sent it to HGTV, and they loved it.”

Now, Married to Real Estate is in its third season. It follows the couple as they find their clients homes in and around Atlanta and transform them into their dream residences—all while they manage their busy family life.

They’ve been together for nearly two decades.

Sherrod and Jackson have been together for 19 years and married for 13 years—and they always make sure to show their love for each other on the special occasion. “We have come so far as individuals and as a couple,” Sherrod wrote on Instagram for their anniversary in 2023. “Happy Anniversary babe! To my best friend, and the love of my life. I choose you every day.”

Jackson also took to Instagram to commemorate the day they got married, which was September 11, 2010. He wrote: “Today marks 13 years as one, 19 years together. To my babe, my life partner, my business partner, my spiritual union….HAPPY ANNIVERSARY LOVE! @egyptsherrod I still everything you. Let’s continue to create memories, build legacy, have fun, and enjoy many more experiences!”

They fell in love while renovating a house.

It may be the perfect home renovation duo love story: Sherrod and Jackson fell in love while working on a house. While the pair knew each other from the world of entertainment, they didn’t truly connect until they were working on a home project for a client. It happened in the early 2000s when Sherrod was working as a real estate agent who was flipping houses. She needed help completing some of the construction, so help was hired. "[She] needed some extra hands, and the team that showed up was mine," Jackson told The List. "And from that point on, we were inseparable."

They have three children.

Their family includes three daughters: 4-year-old Harper, 11-year-old Kendall, and 21-year-old Simone from Mike’s previous relationship. “We're just the [Married to Real Estate] background because our kids steal the show,” Sherrod told House Beautiful when discussing the third season of the series. “Harper steals the show. We were told today at lunch that it's Harper's show.”

Sherrod was a longtime radio personality.

Before real estate, Sherrod had a successful radio broadcast career that spanned nearly 20 years. She started by hosting a jazz radio show and then became a music director in Philadelphia. On-air, she’s interviewed Oprah Winfrey, Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese, and the late James Brown and Prince to name a few. Casual!

Jackson has a background as a DJ.

Apart from being a builder, Jackson also has a professional background as a DJ. Known as DJ Fadelf, he traveled the world for years following this passion.

Their home is incredible.

Married to Real Estate fans have certainly seen glimpses of Sherrod and Jackson’s incredible home on the HGTV show. In a special HGTV tour of their Atlanta home, the couple gave viewers a closer look at the cozy interiors with a color palette of whites, grays, and pops of blue. Sherrod explained in the video: “That’s the problem with designers. We infinitely change our minds, which is also why most of our house is white and natural colors because I’m afraid if I commit too much to color, I’ll get bored quickly. But I get to express myself with our clients’ houses.”

They also have a dreamy backyard, which they’ve shared videos of on Instagram. It features a sizable deck and pool with water features. The outdoor space is lined by tall trees, providing privacy and a magical forest backdrop.

If you haven’t already noticed, they love to have fun…

Sherrod and Jackson don’t take themselves too seriously. The couple is constantly joking around, whether it’s on their HGTV show or online. “The secret to a long-lasting relationship is………. Thumb wrestling,” Sherrod joked on Instagram. “Nah it’s keeping things crazy hot cool. Have fun!! Laugh!! And look good doing it.”

…but they’re also serious about their business and family.

While Sherrod and Jackson certainly know how to have fun, they’re also serious about their work and family. They also don’t miss a beat to show gratitude for the lives they lead. On Instagram, Sherrod reflected on how “we are all only the sum of our experiences and deeds.” She continued: “Tough lessons build character, grace by fire. When I was fired from my first job at 17 I learned ACCOUNTABILITY. When I started gambling with my own money flipping houses I learned CALCULATED RISK. When I decided to start my own business I learned the importance of INTEGRITY. When I chose to leave an 18 year radio career, I learned to WALK ON FAITH. When I wanted love and marriage, I learned there was no ‘I’ in ‘WE.’”

She encouraged everyone to view challenges in a new light. “So let’s look at every obstacle as an opportunity to learn more about our own resilience, fortitude, and determination,” she added.
