The world is a truffle and we’re just living in it — or so it may seem. The sought-after spore (not shroom!) has taken over kitchens one shave, sprinkle or drizzle at a time, upgrading our favorite dishes from fab to even more fab, most notably with Italian cuisine.
There are over 100 species of truffles that vary in seasonality, but you can enjoy umami bliss year-round with truffle-flavored, well, practically anything.
From snacks to condiments, here are 10 of my favorite products that creatively infuse the fungus into their recipes.
Pro tip: A lot of truffle products don’t incorporate actual truffles. Instead, they rely on imitations or essences to capture their distinctly pungent smells and flavors. Be sure to read a product’s nutrition label for a complete list of ingredients to determine if it’s worth the purchase.
Patatas Fritas Torres Black Truffle Premium Potato Chips, $9.95
When I chip, you chip, we chip. Except sans “you” and “we.” When I’m noshing on these fried spuds with black Spanish truffles, I’m not sharing. They’re one of the best I’ve ever tasted, with bold, addictive flavors and only four basic ingredients. Get your own bag. Seriously.
Sabatino Tartufi Truffle Crisps, $6.99
Sabatino Tartufi makes damn good truffle seasonings, which you can use to top these mini crackers with cheese, dips or whatever your heart desires. While the truffle flavor is fainter than the other carb-laden snacks on this list, a lip-smacking blend of pepper and spices keeps the taste complex and interesting.
Heirloom Truffle Mini Popcorn by Pipcorn, $29.99
Once you pop, the fun don’t stop. And while these aren’t truffle-flavored Pringles (which would be ridiculously delicious. Get on that, P&G), truer words have never been spoken when it comes to this truffle-infused heirloom popcorn that happens to be one of Oprah’s Favorite Things (reason alone to purchase it, tbh).
Righteous Felon Truffle-O-Soldier Beef Jerky, $19.99
Low in sugar and high in protein, this truffle-enhanced beef jerky makes a wonderful mid-afternoon snack, especially for those with specific dietary restrictions. It’s also soft and chewy, so you don’t feel like you’re gnawing on a sinewy dog treat like other brands.
Truff White Truffle Hot Sauce, $34.99
When Beyoncé said, “I’ve got hot sauce in my bag,” she was likely talking about Truff’s white truffle variety, which you can pour on any dish that needs a little spicy inspiration. It’s on the pricier side but think of it as an early holiday gift to yourself. Because you’re worth it, and not just because a L’Oréal Paris commercial told you so.
Stonewall Kitchen Truffle Aioli, $13.25
Stonewall Kitchen’s line of aiolis are, bar none, some of the best on the market, but its truffle iteration really shines with a white and black truffle blend that is elevated even more by the presence of garlic. Spread it on sandwiches, crudités or directly on your tongue. I won’t tell anyone and will likely follow suit.
Mezzetta Truffle, Porcini, and Cream Marinara Sauce, $8.69
If this San Marzano tomato-based marinara doesn’t get your mouth drooling, it may be time to see a medical professional. Porcini plays up the truffle flavor profile (they’re cousins, after all), and the cream adds a more decadent touch to the traditional red sauce. Consider it nonna-approved, so you don’t feel guilty about using a jarred variety.
Morelli Italian Pasta Truffle Linguine, $14.88
Keep the truffle theme going and pour that Mezzetta sauce all over this Morelli truffle pasta, which is chock-full of summer truffles and their alluring aroma. You’ll obviously want to shave some actual truffles on top for good measure.
TruffleHunter White Truffle Honey, $33.45
Cue Usher’s “OMG” because this nectar of the gods is so luxurious, so smooth and so tasty that it’s deserving of its own hit song. You’ll find yourself lathering it on practically anything, from cheeses and cured meats to biscuits and even ice cream. Thank the bees for this one.
Momofuku Black Truffle Chili Crunch, $20.99
Sometimes it takes an iconic brand like Momofuku to put a creative spin on an ingredient that has, frankly, become associated with the basic bitch lifestyle. (Not that I’m complaining. I’m the author of Basic Bitchen, after all.) Its black truffle-based chili crunch is sweet, spice and everything nice — a harmonious balance of taste, texture and ingredient ratios that will have you scooping it onto all of your dishes, from eggs in the morning to stir-fry at dinner.
