What's the most important thing to getting a good night's sleep? For some that may be the mattress, for others perhaps it's the pillow (hello, neck support!) and also the bedding. The right sheets, after all, make it pretty difficult for you to want to get out of bed in the mornings. Layering is key to building the bed of your Pinterest board dreams, and you need to pay attention to the top layer. You might prefer a thicker duvet where you can swap out the cover, or a coverlet for a lighter, blanket-like covering. If your preference is a good old-fashioned comforter though, you're in the right place because we found nine of the best comforters on the market right now.

Below, you'll find our editor-approved favorites for a variety of sleep styles because just like you, everyone on the House Beautiful team prefers something different when it comes to their comforters. A bamboo material, for instance, is great for hot sleepers while for those who run cold, you may want a heavier comforter. We even found a good option for couples who sleep at different temperatures, just in case you're heading for a sleep divorce. And whether you prefer down comforters or down alternative, or even a stress-relieving weighted comforter, these editor-favorite, snuggly-soft, ultra-cozy pieces are sure to help you rest easy.

Scroll ahead for our tightly curated list of the best comforters and see the pros and cons to each, according to our editors. We guarantee you'll find a comfortable top layer that you'll want to make your bed with.

Down Comforter All-Season

“I’ve had this down comforter—in the all-season, queen size—for over five years now and I love it," Senior Commerce Editor Marina Liao says. "As the name implies, this is meant to be used year round, but as someone who gets cold easily, I do find that I need an extra blanket on top of this comforter to feel sufficiently warm come winter. My husband, however, finds it just right for him, so to each their own!

The comforter is lightweight as a feather and when I use it with Brooklinen's linen duvet cover, it does feel like a gentle cloud is pressing on me while I sleep. I think the first time I felt this sensation, I was surprised at how airy yet warm our entire bed felt. If you prefer heavier bedding though, this comforter isn’t for you. I have yet to dry clean this, but in-between uses I like to lay it on my foldable laundry rack to air out the comforter in the sun.

Overall, it gets a 9/10 in my book and as a sign of how much my partner and I both love this all-season piece, sometimes one of us burrito-wraps ourself into it at night, leaving the other person in the cold. We may need to upgrade and get the king size version!

Breeze Comforter

“I've had the Buffy Breeze Comforter for just over two months now, and generally, I really enjoy it!" Assistant Editor Meghan Shouse says. "One thing that initially led me to purchasing from Buffy was their trial period: They offer a seven-night trial period that lets you test the comforter before fully committing, and if you realize you don't like it within that week, you can return it for free.

Another aspect that led me to purchasing it was its breathability—I tend to run very hot when I sleep. It's a great comforter and keeps me warm at night, but I don't think I've noticed a huge difference when it comes to temperature regulation. Maybe I had extremely high expectations, but I did want a little bit more when it came to cooling! However, this hasn't bothered me enough to return it, and I'm still quite happy with the weight of it and the feel. My partner says he loves it and that he can notice a difference in temperature though, so maybe it's just me!"

Weighted Comforter

"My winter dream is sleeping under piles of old soft quilts while it’s snowing outside. This weighted comforter gives you that feeling in a single layer," Contributing Senior Editor Elyse Moody says. My husband and I both love how it feels—not too heavy but strangely calming and very warm. It has taken the place of our beloved electric blanket." With 17 pounds of weight, it gives you that comforting, grandma's house sensation of being tucked in under cozy blankets.

Lush Linen Slipper Pink Puff

Editorial Director Joanna Saltz first bought this plush comforter as a pandemic emotional support purchase, and with the luxurious rayon texture and reversible design, we can see why. "It's like that perfect mix of polished and broken in—and it's like relaxed linen without giving that wrinkled-mess vibe that stresses me out," Saltz says. Though it's the most money she's ever spent on a comforter, the oversized spread and hefty weight more than make up for the higher price tag.

Premium Down Comforter

"I have always slept with a blanket (have been using Sferra’s St. Moritz) under a quilt, so when I got the chance to swap to a comforter, I was intrigued," Associate Shopping Editor Jessica Cherner says. "It got delivered to my office in a pretty legit-sized box (it was big), so I was a bit nervous about getting this thing on the subway and then walking two avenues to my apartment, but I was relieved to find that the comforter itself is packed in a durable cloth bag with handles, so I recycled the box and carried the bag like a big purse.

When I got home, I put it in a duvet cover because I like to snack in bed and I didn’t want to mess up the bright white perfection of the comforter. I also always sleep with a top sheet, so there were technically two layers between me and the comforter. It was the perfect thickness. I don’t necessarily sleep hot, but I don’t like feeling like I’m under pounds of fluff because, to me, that feels a bit claustrophobic. It’s still very plush, though, and it has that audible crispness to it that makes my bed feel like a hotel bed. It’s definitely extremely cozy.

It’s also much easier to make my bed in the morning because it’s a much lighter weight than my quilt, so sliding it around to make sure it’s perfectly even on both sides takes about 10 seconds. I think it’s safe to say that I have officially converted to the comforter game. My quilt is currently folded on the top shelf of my closet, where it will probably stay for the remainder of the winter."

Bamboo Comforter

"When I opened the box the comforter came in, I was pleasantly surprised to find it was packaged in a reusable, branded duffel bag instead of hard, plastic covering," Associate Editor Kelly Allen says. "It didn’t have a strong chemical smell, which was another plus. I’ll likely use it to store the comforter when it’s not in use!

The comforter itself is silky to the touch with an obvious sheen. Luckily, that softness didn’t translate to slipperiness. The fabric feels silky and soft, almost like thick silk sheets—but not too slippery that it’s annoying or falling off the bed. For me, it might be too thin. I like both thin and thick comforters, but in general, I prefer something fluffier. There’s really not much in it, so you can’t even really flatten it! That said, it does remind me of some bedding I’ve experienced while staying at five-star hotels. As a blanket, I could easily cuddle up in the comforter for a long movie night. It doesn’t feel heavy when you’re lying down and it’s easy to sit up in. It’s almost like the thickness of a quilt but lighter.

It is a bit thin for generally cold sleepers. It traps some heat, but it is good at keeping you cool. I’m not exactly a hot sleeper, so I wouldn’t use this comforter for every season. Hot sleepers are bound to love it all year round, while cold sleepers might enjoy it during warmer months."

Colfax Comforter

"Placing the Serena & Lily Colfax comforter on my bed immediately gave me a luxurious feeling," Visual Production Coordinator Sabrina Toto says. "The comforter is silky smooth and has a sort of weighted feel even though it’s not super thick. The two-toned blue border is the cutest detail, that combined with the stitching instantly gives a clean girl aesthetic. My bedroom was instantly elevated.

As soon as I crawled into bed I felt covered in warmth and all cozy feelings. I typically toss and turn, switching between sleeping on my side and stomach. I slept like a rock this time and woke up in the same position I fell asleep in. It could’ve been the weekend vibes, but I definitely stayed in bed longer than I usually do since I was so comfortable with my comforter!"

The Ultimate Luxe Down Alternative Dual Comforter

"This comforter was so fluffy and cozy, we couldn’t wait to tuck in at night," Deputy Photo Director Dangi McCoy says. "Out of the box, I appreciate the quality of the comforter, there’s no factory smell out of the package, and the smaller quilting tells me it’ll have long-term use since the filling won’t migrate. Crane & Canopy’s Dual Comforter was perfect for my partner and I to share, he runs hot while I tend to need more layers. It took us a moment to balance our sleepwear choices with the individualized thicknesses (I don’t need to layer up anymore!) but we’re very happy.

I have the warm side so it’s been keeping me cool. My husband has been a little chillier than normal but mostly because he’s used to dressing for a super warm comforter, we’ve been finding our balance. I’m not sure I’d use this in summer–my warm side is very warm! Maybe I need the double cool one!"

Diamond-Stitched Organic Cotton Comforter

"Coyuchi’s Organic Cotton Comforter was a major upgrade from my Amazon budget comforter. Its crinkled percale fabric creates an inviting, rumpled aesthetic in my bedroom," Associate Shopping Editor Janae McKenzie says. "Because I sleep hot at night, usually the top layer is the only layer on me at night, so a cozy experience with my comforter is priority number one. This comforter was ready to use fresh out of the packaging, no odor but also no fluffing or inflating that happens over time.

The first thing I noticed laying under this comforter is its weighted quality. It drapes over you and stays put, there’s no need to re-adjust the sheets a million times until you feel properly snuggled. This weight also makes it pretty easy to make the bed with, as it lays flat without much smoothing needed. It’s a weighted blanket in disguise, but unlike a real one, I can still roll out of bed comfortably. It’s a much thinner fill than some of the fluffy down comforters on our list, but this also meant I slept much cooler than usual. The fabric itself was a touch rougher against my skin, but not in an unpleasant way.

I slept with it on Coyuchi’s cotton soft washed sheets, and not only did the brown striped patterned on the set pair beautifully with the Ginger color of the comforter, but the quilted look disguised the Diamond stitching silhouette that my Euro top Nolah mattress was showing."

How We Chose the Best Comforters

To find our picks for the best comforters out there, we surveyed House Beautiful staff members for their favorites that are already in their homes. We also spent weeks testing extra picks from high-quality bedding brands we love, in materials such as cotton, down, and down alternatives.

Four HB editors provided their favorite picks that they sleep with every night while five editors each tested a different comforter in their home environment, sleeping under it for at least three nights. We evaluated the comforters for their odor out of the packaging, softness, temperature regulation, filling quality, thickness and size. We also tested them in a variety of different sleep setups: with and without a duvet cover, lying down vs. sitting up, sleeping alone vs. with a partner, with top sheets and without.

What to Look for When Buying Comforters

There's plenty of metrics to check for when picking the best comforter for you. Aesthetic is important, of course, but the way it feels, its fill material, and its thickness all matter, as well.

Down vs. Down Alternative: If you prefer a down comforter, be sure to look into the fill power, which indicates the amount of air an ounce of the down can trap. In other words, it measures the comforter’s ability to insulate. You’ll want a comforter with a minimum of 600 fill power for a lightweight duvet insert. Another thing to keep in mind is the ratio of down clusters to feathers. Down clusters are softer and more effective than down feathers. The industry standard is a minimum of 75 percent down clusters, according to Katie Elks, director of design and product development at Brooklinen.

Lightweight vs. Heavyweight: Figuring out if you want a weighted comforter or one that’s more lightweight depends on the type of sleeper you are. Hot sleepers will want a more lightweight comforter, while cold sleepers typically prefer heavier comforters. Heavyweight comforters can also be a good option for hot sleepers during the colder months.
