Whether you enjoy shopping in person or opt to get your vino via wine subscription, you definitely know how to kick back, relax, and enjoy a glass of wine. You’ve invested in stylish oenophile-fabulous accouterments like electric wine openers and wine aerators — but what about your storage situation?

While few wine lovers are ready to invest in a comprehensive wine cellar, many casual wine drinkers find that between hosting parties and house guests, a collection can pile up rather quickly — making wine racks a worthy investment, regardless of how much real estate you can dedicate to housing it.

How We Selected

As an avid wine lover and collector, I definitely know my way around a wine rack. I sought out racks that would serve as both great additions to my home and as wine gifts to friends who value design, convenience, and aesthetics but don’t require a capacious and serious rack for the long haul. In addition, I read through recommendations from editors at Spruce Eats, Food & Wine, Wine Enthusiast, and Liquor and plowed through hundreds of comments and reviews from real-life users online.

Read on, and get ready for a more beautiful and efficient happy hour ahead!

Wood Rack

This minimalist wine rack does exactly what it sets out to do without making a fuss or drawing attention to itself. The 12-bottle unit (11.3 x 12.5 x 36 inches) is small enough to fit on most counters and tables, but with larger sizes available for those in need of more storage, its versatility and modest price point made it an easy winner for our best overall pick. You can also pick from natural or ash wood styles.

Made from sustainably harvested Vermont wood, this wine rack is naturally finished and handcrafted in (you guessed it) Vermont. It comes with a lifetime warranty and can be easily washed with warm, soapy water.

Reviewers love this “great” wine rack, saying it lasts for “years” and is “perfect” for storing bottles. Some do say that the set can have rough edges in spots, but add that those edgy patches can be sanded easily. This modular rack requires assembly, but the instructions are straightforward, and you can customize it to be either square, rectangular or another geometric shape that suits your needs and decor.

Corner Wine Rack

This is about as close as you can get to having a bar at home … without having a bar at home. The large structure tucks into corners and stores up to 42 wine bottles horizontally, up to 15 glasses from the hanging holder, and a range of additional bottles, plates, utensils, and glassware.

The 31.4 x 62.9-inch four-shelf (with a bonus top shelf) L-shaped rack features black painted metal for the frame and wooden shelving (the wood is from particle MDF). The frame is built to last and can be cleaned easily.

The rack does require assembly, and if you have an electric screwdriver on hand, it will certainly speed up the process. Reviewers say that once completed, “the bar looks amazing.” Others say it’s a “great value” but warn that assembly is “tough” if you’re not handy.

Stackable Plastic Fridge Rack

If you want the option of keeping your wine bottles in the fridge, this stackable rack is a great option. You can choose from a range of sizes that will store between 2 and 24 bottles. The 4-bottle rack we have featured here is 4 x 7.6 x 8 inches—just big enough to fit the wine bottles but not so large that it overwhelms your refrigerator’s interior.

This rack also fits comfortably on your kitchen counter. The modern, sleek design, coupled with the clear plastic material, will make it blend into most settings, but more modern interiors will pair best. This rack, unlike most of the others on our list, requires zero assembly, a boon for those without a set of screwdrivers. When the lightweight (15.8 ounces) rack gets dirty, resist the urge to put the rack in the dishwasher, as it can warp. Just wipe it clean with a damp cloth.

More than 82% of reviewers give this five stars on Amazon, writing that it is their “best kitchen purchase for 2023” and the “easiest rack for stackable wine storage.”

45-Bottle Wall-Mounted Wine Rack

For wine lovers who don’t have room for a dedicated cellar and may actually like the idea of showing off their prized bottles, this wall-mounted rack is a great option. (Just ensure it is a cool space in your home and that the rack isn’t being hit by a lot of direct light, which can degrade the quality of your wine over time).

The 75 x 41 x 4.25 inches rack comes with an installation kit and the necessary mounting hardware, along with a video tutorial and easy instructions. The rack weighs 39.2 pounds by itself, and with 45 bottles of wine added, the weight will be considerable, so ensure your wall is strong enough to hold the weight. (It holds up to 170 pounds).

Reviewers say the installation is “easy,” and once up, it “looks great.” Others pipe up that while installation isn’t “hard,” it takes a lot of time if you don’t have a power drill.

Stackable Modular Wine Rack

If you have a cellar and you want a value-priced one-and-done storage unit, step right up. This wood wine rack may not be much to look at (it hasn’t been stained and instead has a raw look), but it more than makes up for it in terms of functionality.

You will be able to pack 96 bottles into this 44.5 x 11.4 x 37.2-inch wine rack, with eight tiers that fit 12 bottles in each layer. The rack weighs 21.49 pounds by itself. It is easier than most racks to put together; each piece of wood has notches and slots that fit together. You do not need any special equipment to assemble the rack. Once put together, the rack is sturdy and won’t wobble.

Reviewers say this rack is “surprisingly strong” and “stable.” Others say it may be “simple,” but it is a “breeze to assemble” and is “easy to use.” Some warn that it is a “tad tight” for Champagne bottles but “workable.”

12-Bottle Wall-Mounted Wine Bottle Rack

Wine labels can be works of art in and of themselves. If you have a small collection of gorgeous bottles that you love to ogle, this circular wine rack is just what you need. The wine rack comes fully assembled and is made of durable black metal. It is 35 pounds by itself and holds up to 50 pounds; you’re going to want to make sure that you mount this beauty to a sturdy wall.

The piece is durable and easy to clean — just wipe it with a damp sponge when it gets dusty. Keep in mind that if you want to preserve the wine, in addition to displaying it, you will want to keep the room in which it is hung relatively cool, and you’ll want to make sure the bottles aren’t in the path of direct sunlight.

Reviewers on Wayfair give the wine rack an average of 4.8 out of 5 stars, saying they “love” the “elegant rack,” adding that it serves as a “great conversation piece” with “sturdy construction” and incredible “durability.”

Storing Your Wine

Storing wines the right way is more important than you might think. Serious collectors will tell you that temperature is key: you’re going to want to aim for a temperature that hovers between 45- and 65 degrees Fahrenheit, ideally with a humidity level of 70%, explains Bertil Jean-Chronberg, owner of Boston’s Bonde Fine Wine Shop. (Your basement is ideal; avoid any space exposed to direct sunlight or close to a heating vent).

Practicality and functionality are key too. If you know you’re going to be drinking your bottles within the next several months, buying a small to medium-sized wall-mounted or modular rack that you display in your living or dining room is perfectly fine for the wine, and it can add an element of playful fun to your interior design.

If you plan to keep several of your bottles on hand for special occasions or as an investment, you’re going to want a larger rack that you keep in your basement or another temperature-controlled room.

Bottle Placement

“Always place your wine bottles horizontally, especially if the bottles are equipped with a cork. This prevents the cork from drying out. Storing the wine horizontally will allow oxygen in large quantities to penetrate the bottle and prevent wine from leaking out of the bottle. If the bottle is equipped with a twist cap or a Vino Seal cap, the orientation in which you store it does not matter — the wine can remain vertical,” says Jean-Chronberg.
