How should those with sensitive skin approach shaving?

The more damaged, dry, or textured the skin is, the more prone it is to damage during shaving. "Skin-bearing areas with thick, coarse hair are also more prone to damage with shaving, as the hair becomes cut at an oblique angle and can grow away from the direction of where it would normally exit the follicle," Sartor says.

Shaving less frequently could minimize the amount of irritation to the skin, particularly if it's sensitive. "Other tips to minimize irritation include: using a lubricating shaving cream, avoiding pulling at the skin when shaving, avoiding shaving against the grain (it is better to shave in the direction of hair growth), using a sharp multi-blade razor, taking short strokes with shaving, and avoiding shaving over the same area twice," she notes.
