If you’re interested in reading manga regularly, well, you should start with our breakdown of how to read comics and manga online, but once you’re done with that, you will inevitably find that the Shonen Jump App (which is a part of Viz in the US) is one of the best ways to read a variety of ongoing and popular manga series – latest chapters of most series are even available to read for free!

In this list we’re ranking to best ongoing and critically acclaimed series that you can catch up with using the Shonen Jump App right now. There are a bunch of finished series that we’ve left off the list, and there are a bunch of brand new manga that we haven’t had the time to make a proper judgement call on, but the manga in this list are certified bangers, ranked from the worst of the best, to the very best. Read through our list below, and start download chapters.

Dragon Ball Super

The manga shouldn't recap the movies, too.

Akira Toriyama, Shueisha

This one barely made it into this shonen-filled top ten. The Dragon Ball Super manga has had some fantastic moments, and the recent Moro and Granolah arcs have had some surprisingly strong moments and top of new transformations for our heroes. Plus, seeing teenage Trunks and Goten going to school is a beautiful slice of life that Dragon Ball fans will adore. Shame that it, like the anime, recaps the movies, and is currently recapping the Super Hero movie. It feels unnecessary, we’d rather get straight into the new content, but here we are. Dragon Ball Super: hardly an essential, but good fun for Dragon Ball fans.

Kaiju No. 8

Kaiju No. 8 is a great action brawler.

Naoya Matsumoto, Shueisha

Kaiju are powerful monsters that invade and destory cities, and Japan has the highest rate of kaiju attacks in the world. As a result, the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force is established with the goal of fighting them all in superhuman battles. Only, protagonist Kafka’s job is to clean up the corpses after the fight is done. After finally deciding to join the fight himself, he undergoes a metamorphosis, and becomes the eighth daikaiju, aptly named Kaiju No. 8. Kafka teams up with the Defense Force to save Japan from the kaiju threat. This series is getting an anime adaptation by Production I.G in 2024, so you should start reading now to get ahead of the hype.

Hunter x Hunter

Hunter X Hunter is beloved and mysterious - let's hope for a new chapter soon.

Yoshihiro Togashi, Shueisha

This counts as ongoing, okay? Updates may be few and far between because of Togashi’s health concerns, but the manga saw multiple new chapters in late 2022, and the fanbase is excited for more. To understand why the fans have been so eager for more Hunter x Hunter after all these years, you’ll have to read it for yourself.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen is huge right now, and you should see why for yourself.
Gege Akutami, Shueisha

Jujutsu Kaisen is huge right now, and you should see why for yourself.

Gege Akutami, Shueisha

Jujutsu Kaisen’s anime series is taking the world by storm, but you shouldn’t ignore the manga. While also being well ahead of the anime story, the narrative flows better in the early chapters. Gege Akutami’s unique artwork shouldn’t be ignored either – Jujutsu Kaisen is a safe bet for a great action series.

My Hero Academia

Deku's latest manga adventures aren't to be missed.
Kohei Horikoshi, Shueisha

Deku's latest manga adventures aren't to be missed.

Kohei Horikoshi, Shueisha

This is currently one of the most popular manga in the world with several critically acclaimed anime seasons, so of course you know all about My Hero Academia, right? Well, if you’re an anime-only watcher you may have been spoiled on some recent manga events that don’t quite paint a full picture. Long story short, MHA’s current story arc is its best one yet, and you might not want to wait for the next anime season to see what happens next spoiler-free.

Sakamoto Days

Just read Sakamoto Days already.
Yuto Suzuki, Shueisha

Just read Sakamoto Days already.

Yuto Suzuki, Shueisha

Yes, I have already explained in detail why Sakamoto Days is the best manga you’re not reading, but it’s worth repeating. Former hitman Taro Sakamoto is superhuman, but all he wants is a quiet life with his family and the people he cares about – and that just so happens to be the reason he gets pulled back into battle so often. Heartfelt and exciting: don’t miss it.

One-Punch Man

One of the greats.
ONE, Yusuke Murata, Shueisha

One of the greats.

ONE, Yusuke Murata, Shueisha

The second season of the One-Punch Man anime was, in my humble opinion, awful. Disappointing on every level, so it’s a good thing I had already caught up with the manga before that aired, otherwise I may have given up. The recent chapters featuring the battle with Garou are some of the best work we’ve ever seen from ONE and Yusuke Murata, and every chapter feels like a reason to celebrate.

Spy x Family

A comedy first, an action-thriller second.
Endo Tatsuya, Shueisha

A comedy first, an action-thriller second.

Endo Tatsuya, Shueisha

Spy x Family is another series that got a recent successful anime series, and yes: the manga is fantastic. Mangaka Tatsuya Endo does a fantastic job of contorting faces and limbs for maximum impact, both emotional and physical. Spy x Family is a comedy series first and foremost, but its action sequences are beautiful and exciting, with the dynamic of an assassin mother, spy father, and telepathic child keeping their secrets from one another proving to be a winning formula. Anime or manga – both, why not – you have to start Spy x Family.

Chainsaw Man

We all relate to Denji, deep inside.
Tatsuki Fujimoto, Shueisha

We all relate to Denji, deep inside.

Tatsuki Fujimoto, Shueisha

Denji might seem immature, but you shouldn’t ignore Tatsuki Fujimoto’s magnum opus. In a world where devils could appear and kill you at seemingly any moment, Denji just wants to achieve the most simple of dreams: eat good food, sleep in a warm place, and maybe get a girlfriend. His juvenile behavior and outlook might lead you astray though, as Chainsaw Man is secretly one of the most thoughtful manga you could read right now, with some of the best platonic relationships of any series, manga or otherwise. Chainsaw Man is the definition of weird and wonderful.

One Piece

The return of the king.
Eiichiro Oda, Shueisha

The return of the king.

Eiichiro Oda, Shueisha

The don, the king, the unstoppable. Don’t let the One Piece Netflix series distract you: One Piece’s manga is fantastic right now. As of the time of writing, the manga has currently gone without even showing the main Straw Hat crew for four months, and each chapter has still been a sensation in the community. One Piece is hurtling towards some huge climaxes and emotional moments in its final saga, and now is the best time to catch up and experience it as it unfolds week to week.
