The 15 Best King-Size Blankets to Keep You Warm and Toasty

At night, I like to create what I call my bedtime cocoon. It’s the perfect—and best—way to catch some Zzzs. Of course, my bed has my Goldilocks comforter on it (not too heat-trapping, not too cold-inducing) that makes it all too easy to climb into after a long day out in the world. But sometimes I need a little extra oomph, something that will add even more warmth once those colder months hit. And that layer is none other than an extra blanket stacked on top of my comforter, the perfect addition to my nighttime routine.

More from Robb Report

The best blanket, for many reasons, is a king-size one. Primarily, I have plenty of room to spread out and make the most of that cozy square footage. And on the most frigid of nights, nothing is better than knowing that I won’t run out space under the covers. Plus, a king-size blanket is a bit of a statement-maker, a piece to leave on the foot of my bed to add some texture, some color, perhaps, to my bedroom.

What’s more, you can pick pretty much any material you’d like, from cotton to linen to wool, and you’ll still be adding a touch of luxury to your space. Below, the best king-size blankets that’ll upgrade your sleeping situation.

What to Consider Before Buying the Best King-Size Blankets:

Size: A standard king bed is 80 inches long, 76 inches wide, meaning you need a blanket that at least can cover that amount of real estate. Ideally, you’re looking for something in the 90-to-104-inch range. Otherwise, you’re looking at toes, arms, and legs sticking out of your cuddly nighttime cocoon, exposed to the cold and left to shiver from sunset to sunrise—name a fate worse than that (you can’t). Even worse, if you must share your new blanket, there will not be enough room for you to snuggle up with your beau under the covers, kicking off the ever-brutal tug-of-war of who gets the most blanket coverage when night falls. To avoid that fruitless battle entirely, make sure you get a king-size blanket of merit, one worthy of royalty, one of proper size. Here, bigger really is better.

Material: These days, king-size blankets come in just about every fabric you can think of. Bamboo, with its fantastic cooling properties? Check. Cashmere, for living in the lap of luxury (and utter warmth)? Check. And we can’t forget about good ol’ cotton, that reliable material that is perfect to adorn any bed. The best material for you depends on what you’re looking for, of course. If a lighter, breezier option to wind down is what you’re after, go for a linen. If you want a bit of weight, a quilted wool is the best way to go.

Care: The ultimate way to ensure the life of your new king-size blanket (much like anything else in your life) is giving it the proper TLC. Read: Don’t ignore the care instructions on that pesky little tag; they should become ingrained in your psyche. Blankets fall under two categories, either machine washable or dry clean. If you don’t mind taking a trip to the cleaners , a dry clean choice won’t bother you at all. But if the idea of remembering to bring your new blanket out for a wash seems like a nuisance, then make sure you pick a machine-washable option.
