While the first Monday in May brought out heavenly bodies on the red carpet—Rihanna as fashion’s pope in Margiela, Katy Perry angelic in Versace’s wings—the trend for forward-thinking dressing carried over to Cannes and beyond. Lupita Nyong’o radiated haute-Disney-princess vibes in blush organza from Prada, while Emilia Clarke swapped out Daenerys’s otherworldly ensembles for an Italian contessa via Valentino. Filmdom’s most legendary red carpet also witnessed the return of the perfect black dress: multilayered vintage Chanel (on Penélope Cruz), modern asymmetry with Dynasty flourishes by Armani (on Cate Blanchett), and elevated Daisy Buchanan (Chloë Sevigny in Chanel). No doubt these were important nods to Time’s Up and #MeToo, but brilliant (fashion) moves nonetheless. Statement dressing at its best.
