10 Beauty Mishaps You Don’t Want To Make During Your Job Interview

First impressions count, even more so during interviews.

If you are considering a career switch or if you are a fresh graduate looking for your first real job, don’t let a beauty mishap kill your chances of getting that dream job!

1. Bad Breath

image

Don’t make your interviewer crave the end of the interview with your bad breath. This may be hard to control but here are some tips that can alleviate the problem, at least during the interview!

  • Drink lots of water

  • Sleep early the night before

  • Clean your tongue while brushing your teeth

  • Bring along a breath freshener ie. mouth rinse, sugarfree sweets

2. Frizzy Unruly Hair

If you can’t even manage your hair, how can you manage this job well?

We know you can’t help it but if your hair looks like a hot mess on the day of your interview, well, we’re quite certain that your interviewer WILL notice.

But what can you do to combat frizz in hot and humid Singapore?

Use frizz control hair products on towel-dried hair

They’re not a perfect solution but some of these products can help reduce some of the frizziness without being too oily, heavy or sticky!

  • REDKEN Frizz Dismiss Leave-in Smoothing Control Cream FPF 40 (Frizz Protection Factor)

  • Kerastase Discipline Fluidissime Spray

  • KMS Tame Frizz Smoothing Lotion

Use a hair dryer to blow hair in downward motion

Once the above products are applied, comb your hair through your fingers while pointing the hairdryer in a downward direction to achieve a salon blow-out look.

Go for a suitable hair treatment

If the above are too much work for you, consider a suitable treatment to tame the frizz.

Traditionally, Keratin Treatments are found to be really effective in taming the frizz and promote ease of styling.

However, Keratin Treatments tend to straighten out the hair and tend to work less well over time.

Fortunately for us, salons in Singapore are introducing revolutionary new treatments later this year. Beautyundercover.sg will be sharing more about these treatments so stay tuned for our updates!

3. Ugly Hair Roots

Black hair roots is a clear sign that you have NOT been taking care of your hair.

Don’t let your brassy copper-ish hair colours keep you away from that client-facing job by refreshing your hair colour before the interview.

Just remember to go for a skillful hairstylist who can do the colour correction well or you may end up with a two different tones of hair colour depending on where your hair roots ends!

4. Messy Eyebrows

image

Eyebrows are one of the first few things your interviewer will notice about you. Don’t let a messy brow detract your interviewer’s attention!

Go for an eyebrow threading or plucking for a more well designed brow! Don’t ask for a eyebrow design that is too thin; a strong and slightly thicker brow can make you look more polished and confident!

5. Mascara Clumps and Smudges

Mascara is a basic essential in the makeup routine to help you highlight your beautiful eyes. Mascara clumps and smudges can however be very unsightly and messy to deal with!

If you are not very confident with putting on mascara, lash extensions can be another fuss-free way to make your eyes look good without worrying about mascara mishaps the morning of your interview!

Do however go for an experienced lash therapist who can create a natural-looking and professional lash design for you!

6. Excessive Makeup

There is a fine line between professional and dramatic.

Stay within the line by keeping away from glittery eyeshadows and shiny lip glosses! Think natural makeup look and not night out when applying makeup. A winged eyeliner is fine, however, nothing dramatic. Keep your makeup simple and remember, a little blush goes a long way.

Remember to keep lipstick off your teeth because that can be a big distraction during the interview!

Secret tip: Stickyour finger into your mouth and pout. Pull your finger out and voilà! You’ve successfully removed the lipstick that would stain your teeth.

7. Serious Adult Acne

Makeup can conceal acne but only to a certain extent.

For those of you plagued with acne issues, here are some tips from Shiori from NUA Singapore, one of our favourite facial therapists in Singapore!

  • Certain comedogenic cosmetic products, such as BB or CC creams may sound attractive to those of you with acne skin. However, the wrong type of BB cream, serum or moisturizer can actually clog your pores and cause you to have more acne instead! Therefore, DON’T try a new facial products days before your interview. If you are still weeks away, you can consider trying new facial products on a small spot on your face to test if it is right for you! If not, visit a dermatologist for recommendations.

  • Simple is best and it’s always safer to stick with organic or/and dermatologist-certified products.

  • Clay cleansers are a lot more effective than typical cleansers in making sure that your face is well cleansed. Therefore, do try daily pore cleansing using clay cleansers instead of normal cleansers!

  • Remember to put on non-comedogenic sun screen as excessive sun can also irritate your skin and worsen your acne issues!

If you are able to incorporate the above tips into your skincare regime, you are likely to see an improvement in your skin after some time!F

For those who want to accelerate the process, however, you can also stop by NUA Singapore. Shiori from NUA has developed an acne program to help customers improve their skin condition which includes Gentle Peeling, Deep Pore Ultrasound Cleansing, Manual Extraction, Purifying and Soothing treatments.

A 22 year old customer of hers was plagued with acne 6 months before trying out NUA. She came to NUA Singapore every 3 weeks for 5 sessions, used topical creams and clay cleanser masks for daily care at home as well as recommended acne treatment lotion and moisturizer. For make-up, she switched from heavy liquid foundation to mineral skin care foundation and concealer and avoided comedogenic cosmetic products. This is the result 3 months into the acne program!

It does however mean that you have to start early, even if you are only intending to apply for jobs in the next few months!

8. Too-sexy Outfits

image

You’re going for an interview, not a party.

So remember to dress the part and avoid too-sexy outfits and hairstyles that are too elaborate! Opt for a sleek, fuss-free and a professional hairstyle.

While straight blown dry hair is common in Singapore, a neat ponytail or a chignon are acceptable as well.

9. Chipped (or Filthy!) Nails

Looking presentable also includes your nail care. Be sure to neatly file your nails and remove any chipped nail polish as it makes you look unprofessional.

If nails are not your thing, schedule a manicure with a reliable nail salon a day or two before your interview!

We would recommend you to go for Soft Gel Nails ie. Calgel or Paragel nails as they don’t chip easily, are very durable and don’t damage your nails as much (if at all!)

10. Overpowering Fragrance

It’s important to smell good but you don’t want to end up overwhelming the interviewer with your perfume either. Stay away from overtly sexual fragrances and spritz in areas such as on your neck, wrists, inside your elbows and behind your knees.
