A glamorously appointed villa in the viticultural heart of California’s Napa Valley that was previously owned and overhauled by Gary Friedman, the longtime chairman and CEO of RH (formerly Restoration Hardware), has popped up for sale at $10.5 million. Hillary Ryan of Sotheby’s International Realty—St. Helena Brokerage holds the listing.

Friedman purchased the St. Helena property in 2013 for $5.9 million and spent several years transforming it into a manicured haven for both relaxation and elegant indoor-outdoor entertaining. The property was dubbed Eight Palms, for the eight date palms that stand sentry over the property, two in the walled and gated entrance courtyard and six lined up alongside the swimming pool and spa.

Friedman held on to the property until 2017 when it was sold to the current owner for a bit more than $7.5 million. The sprawling home, picturesquely surrounded by vineyards, looks much as it did when Friedman sold it, with a smooth concrete exterior and monochromatic gray interiors zhuzhed up with plush furnishings, glinting brass and gold accents, and bold punches of vibrant colors.

The dining area, with two walls of full-height wine display cabinets, is open to the marble kitchen.

The main living and entertaining spaces are contained in a sweeping great room. A fireplace anchors one end of the spacious double-height living room. At the other end, under a lower, more intimate ceiling and catering to oenophiles, is a dining area with two massive, floor-to-ceiling wine display cases with custom lighting. Beyond the dining area, the open-plan kitchen has a marble island and a brass hood over the range. Elsewhere are a media/family room, a study, and an indoor-outdoor gym space.

The main residence disperses five bedrooms and four bathrooms, plus a powder room, over 5,140 square feet. The lone, ultra-private guest suite on the upper floor has a balcony with panoramic views over the rolling countryside, while the main-floor primary suite is replete with a fireplace, French doors to the gardens, extensive walk-in closets, and a lavish bath with two glass showers. Outside the bathroom, an outdoor shower is situated in a walled courtyard.

A deep loggia runs along the backside of the house. Mirroring the layout of the great room, at one end is a fireplace, and at the other is a dining area and outdoor kitchen with a built-in grill and a pizza oven. At the far end of the swimming pool and spa, which is lined with a quartet of palm-shaded sunbathing terraces, each bordered with clipped boxwoods, is the 630-square-foot poolside guesthouse. The main space opens to both the pool and to a large, graveled patio with pretty views over the vineyards. There’s also a bathroom and a kitchenette.

Friedman, whose success as an executive in the home improvement retail space has made him a billionaire, has for decades maintained a solid base in the San Francisco Bay area community of Tiburon—he grew up nearby—but his most substantial residential holdings nowadays are in southern California. In addition to a $37 million mansion in the mountains above Beverly Hills, he recently splashed out $26.7 million for an oceanfront home in Malibu.
