Indie horror games on Steam run the gamut from campy fun to seriously messed up, but one of 2023’s best games stands above them all. The last few years saw the rise of a trend where developers tried recapturing the magic of classic Resident Evil, a trend that gave us the likes of Signalis and the upcoming Holstin. The folks at Black Tabby, makers of the ongoing Scarlet Hollow visual novel, eschewed that and did something rather more inventive.

The result was Slay the Princess, a narrative-driven psychological horror game that’s 20 percent off during Steam’s Midweek Madness sale, down to $14.39 from its usual $17.99. The sale’s timing coincides with a hefty new update that revamps the endgame and adds new orchestral renditions of some of Slay the Princess’ most important compositions, performed by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra.

The Slay the Princess update injects over 3,000 words of new dialogue in addition to fixing some of the dialogue choices, so what you’re doing – and what happens as a result – is clearer. Black Tabby also tossed in some fresh new animations to shake up the ending even further.

Black Tabby also announced that Slay the Princess sold over 200,000 copies on Steam since it launched in at the end of October 2023 – a pretty big achievement, given the genre competition. It’s accumulated nearly 10,000 “overwhelmingly positive” reviews on the platform as well. If you’re keen to check it out, now’s as good a time as any.
