This $1 Million-a-Week Private Island in the Maldives Has Its Own 9-Hole Golf Course

You. Your loved ones. Yachting up to 34 knots. Golf. Massage. Dinner at the first and only restaurant in the Maldives to be voted into Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants awards. Dolphin-watching excursions at sunset. Repeat.

There’s a lot to love about Velaa Private Island, especially when you take it up on its latest offer: to buy the whole thing out for $1 million a night. Located on the Noonu Atoll in the Maldives, the island is home to 47 lavish villas, houses, and residences on-site (including the Romantic Pool Residence, which you can only get to by boat), and 18 of these abodes are built over water for that soul-restoring ocean TLC. Designed by Czech architect Petr Kolar, the property is accessible from Malé via seaplane or onboard one of Velaa’s yachts whisking you off to your secluded Shangri-La.

An overview of Velaa Private Island
The sprawling island is stacked with a resort’s worth of luxe fun.

For the health-obsessed, Velaa recently unveiled an incredible “wellbeing village,” which focuses on Ayurveda and Eastern medicine complete with steam rooms infused with healing herbs and two doctors-in-residence, an ayurvedic doc from India, and an osteopath. There’s also the Velaa Spa, which is home to the Maldives’ only snow room. It doles out treatments like caviar facials and the “royal rose” body wrap. Or break a sweat in non-sauna form: Play tennis, paddle tennis, or squash; conquer the climbing wall; ace a serve on the beach volleyball court; or simply go for a run around your beautiful environs. You could also tee-off on the nine-hole golf course followed by a dip in or watersport on the Indian Ocean, like kite surfing or catamaran sailing. But thrill-seekers will want to latch on to the “Tandem Jetovator,” which flies up to 25 feet above the water or dives below to 10 feet.

A villa at Velaa Private Island
With 47 private villas scattered around the shores you can invite all of your favorite people.

Of course, however you choose to spend your days, you’ll be in good hands with hospitality pros catering to your every whim, whether you want to fly in a specific bottle of wine or are hoping to arrange a surprise concert for your loved ones during your stay. When hunger strikes, let a private chef whip up the day’s catch or dine at Asia’s 50 Best Aragu at Velaa Private Island, where hits range from pan-fried Red Emperor fillet with scallion pesto, ginger, fennel, and bouillabaisse to limoncello mousse with candied lemon and a thyme biscuit.

Watersports at Velaa Private Island
The island comes with all the toys.

As general manager Wayne Milgate puts it, “Velaa is the epitome of privacy and luxury, with everything from extravagant dining experiences to state-of-the-art water sports, and everything in between.”

But the island buyout takes things one step further as it “literally turns the island into a playground for you and your guests,” he adds.

For the best sunsets on the island, Milgate suggests heading to the property’s Japanese Teppanyaki restaurant Tavaru, the tallest building on any Maldivian resort, best chased by a cocktail or mocktail as the sky is streaked with pastel sorbet hues. Alas, such plans might conflict with feasting on that aforementioned Red Emperor fillet at Aragu. But hey, that’s why you opted for a multi-night private buyout, right?
