"It is important to use a warm curler rather than a hot one to reduce risk of heat injury, to follow user instructions, and to avoid misuse or overuse."

Similar to using hot tools, like a curling iron on your hair, the key is warm—not hot—heat in moderation. Too much heat around the eye and on the lashes can not only be damaging to the lashes, but it also poses a burn risk to the delicate eyelid skin, says Marisa Garshick, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Medical Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery Centers in New York and New Jersey.

Are there any disadvantages to using heated eyelash curlers?

While heated eyelash curlers can be effective in achieving a long-lasting curl, there are potential disadvantages to consider before using one:

• Overheating: Some devices may not have adjustable heat settings, posing a risk of overheating and causing damage to the lashes.

• Burns: Misuse of any heated device around the delicate skin of the eyelid can result in burns to the eyelids or lash line.

• Incompatibility with mascara: Some heated curlers may not work well with mascara, and using them together could lead to clumping or uneven results or even lash damage.

Avoid using a heated eyelash curling while wearing mascara. "It's best to use a heated lash curler before applying mascara, as the ingredients in mascara can heat up and potentially damage the eyelashes," says Inna Lazar, OD, an optometrist at Greenwich Eyecare. "For safer use, apply mascara right after curling your eyelashes."
