How Jen Selter Gave Her Mom A Body As Enviable As Hers

Jen Selter, 21, became famous when she began posting photos of her toned backside on Instagram back in May 2012. Since then she — or should we say, her butt — has raked in more than 5 million followers, and Selter has become an international celebrity and fitness spokesmodel.

But, it wasn’t another enviable photo of her derrière that caught the attention of millions this week; it was a snap of her mom, more importantly her mom’s body. At 47, Jill Selter has an almost identical body to her daughter 26 years her junior and credits this transformation to hard work and personal training by her daughter.

Like her famous daughter, Jill didn’t always have the healthiest lifestyle. “I was ‘skinny fat’ – skinny on the outside but on the inside had very poor eating habits and had no motivation to go to the gym,” she tells Yahoo Health. “I never had a balanced meal, was always snacking on chocolate Goobers throughout the day and eating late at night.”

Jen came in and swapped her mom’s morning bagel for yogurt or oatmeal with berries and peanut butter, her chips and pasta lunch for grilled chicken Caesar salads and her cheeseburger dinners at 10pm to salads or chicken burgers at 7pm. “It was Jen’s dedication and passion for fitness that rubbed off on me,” adds Jill. “We began staying home more often and cooking nutritious meals, snacking on fresh fruit and vegetables and incorporating a daily workout routine into my schedule.”

Jen often posts her glute-toning and tummy-tightening workouts online and started using the moves and gym time that sculpted her body to whip her mom into shape. “The definition of ‘in shape’ to me, means establishing a healthy relationship with yourself and the gym and making smart choices in the kitchen,” Jen tells Yahoo Health.

"Working out is a lifestyle and the time and effort you put into it will reflect in your results." Now, the duo hits the gym together several days a week for about an hour where they do exercises such as ball crunches, step-ups and leg throw-downs. But, there is one move that Jen admits she does differently than her mom, ” I squat more than my mom.”

Jill, a mother of two, hopes her transformation inspires other women her age to be healthy and take care of their bodies. “Age is only a number and should not limit us from living a healthy life or reaching our physical goals,” she says. “I have more energy; I’m more focused and can now at 47 years old confidently post pictures of myself on social media to inspire others my age. Working out changed my life.”

But this change didn’t come without struggle. “The hardest part is to incorporate healthier eating habits and making time for the gym,” Jill adds. “I never thought I would be able to get in the shape I am in now, but Jen pushed me everyday.”

And as much as Jen has inspired her mom to get her best body ever, she too has been affected by her mom’s transformation. “Getting in shape isn’t a destination; it is an ongoing process,” says Jen. “When I am older I will look back at her pictures to motivate me to never give up and I aspire to look like her!”
