I come bearing (more) good news for my fellow caffeine lovers. We’ve already reported this month that a recent study found people have a 20 percent lower risk of developing melanoma if they consume an average of four cups of caffeinated coffee a day. And if you’re suffering from hair loss, caffeine apparently helps with that, too. But now a new study shows that caffeine can actually help you burn more calories and fat. Aw, yeah!

Researchers in Spain found that women experienced a postexercise boost in metabolism when they had about two cups of coffee an hour before working out. And according to an Australian study, women who took an average of 177 milligrams of caffeine 90 minutes before riding an exercise bike and an equal amount 30 minutes afterward burned more calories during the workout, as well as in the following two hours, compared with women who had no caffeine but cycled at the same speed and intensity. Valentín E. Fernández Elías, a coauthor of the Spanish study and an exercise scientist at the University of Castilla–La Mancha told Allure, “The impact on body weight needs to be assessed, but caffeine reduces fatigue and increases enjoyment during exercise, which may also aid weight loss by motivating people to work out longer.” So cheers to more coffee, less misery, and a better body.
