Good news, wine-loving dudes — a new study out of Harvard University and the University of East Anglia found that consuming foods and drinks rich in flavonoids, which are found in red wine, berries, tea, and more, may lead to a decrease in erectile disfunction, a condition that affects roughly 50 percent of men.

Researchers studied over 50,000 healthy middle-aged men, recording their diets, weight, physical activity, and ability to get and maintain a direction, over the past 30 years. While over one-third of men reported new cases of ED over the course of the study, men who consumed at least a few servings of flavonoid-rich foods and drinks each week were 10 percent less likely to have ED, the study found.

“We already knew that intake of certain foods high in flavonoids may reduce the risk of conditions including diabetes and cardiovascular disease,” lead researcher Aedin Cassidy said in a statement. “This is the first study to look at the association between flavonoids and erectile dysfunction.”

While an improved sex life is worth the effort alone, preventing and reversing ED can pay off in other healthy ways, too. “Erectile dysfunction is often an early barometer of poor vascular function and offers a critical opportunity to intervene and prevent cardiovascular disease, heart attack and even death,” study author Eric Rimm said.

If you suffer from erectile disfunction, talk with your doctor about options before altering your diet.
