Are You On A Date With a Good Guy? Look At This Body Part To Find Out

Is your date a wolf in sheep’s clothing? Or is he a unicorn, a.k.a. an attractive, nice guy who doesn’t have any skeletons (literal or figurative) in his closet? Usually you’d have to date him for a bit to find out, but a new study suggests taking a peek at his hands for a hint. If he’s got short index fingers and long ring fingers, you might have hit the nice-guy jackpot, says new research in Personality and Individual Differences.
The study authors determined that men who have short index fingers and long index fingers are usually kinder to women, and that might be because of hormones (especially testosterone) they came into contact with in their mothers’ wombs. The smaller the ratio of index finger divided by ring finger, the higher level of male hormones they were exposed to.

Most guys have index fingers that are shorter than their ring fingers, so that says something good about your dating options right there. “When with women, men with smaller ratios were more likely to listen attentively, smile and laugh, compromise or compliment the other person,” Debbie Moskowitz, lead author and professor of psychology at McGill, says in a press release. They acted nice whether they were interacting with romantic options or women who were just friends or coworkers, and they were less likely to argue with women than with men. Guys with larger ratios were likely to argue with both. As for women, our digit ratios didn’t predict how we’d act in the study. Such wildcards, we are.

Interestingly enough, previous research has suggested that guys with smaller digit ratios have more kids. “Our research suggests they have more harmonious relationships with women; these behaviors support the formation and maintenance of relationships with women. This might explain why they have more children on average,” says Moskowitz.
Want to check out your date’s hands without being creepy? If you can’t take a good enough look, just grab them and tell him how nice they are. That way you can take a look while buttering him up. Two birds, one stone, etc.
