Amy’s Kitchen Recalls Lasagna, Enchiladas With Spinach Over Listeria Fears

Amy’s Kitchen has issued a massive recall of its spinach-containing products amid fears of listeria contamination.

The recall affects 73,897 cases of products that include organic spinach; one of Amy’s spinach suppliers had informed the company about possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, which causes the foodborne illness of listeriosis.

The products include certain gluten-free and regular lasagnas, tofu scrambles, spinach pizzas, brown rice and vegetable bowls, and enchiladas. The exact products (including the lot codes and manufacture dates) affected by the recall can be found on the Food and Drug Administration’s website.

Products affected by the recall were shipped throughout the U.S. and Canada. There have not been any reports of illness tied to the potential listeria contamination.

Listeriosis causes short-term symptoms for most healthy people, including nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache and fever. However, it can be fatal for certain people, including young kids, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. It can also be dangerous for pregnant women, for whom it can cause miscarriage or stillbirth, according to the FDA.

Listeriosis is most often acquired through the consumption of contaminated food, particularly in uncooked meat and vegetables, unpasteurized dairy and some cooked or processed foods, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports. 

Earlier this month, Blue Bell Creameries recalled some of its products due to listeria concerns. And last year, a listeria outbreak from apples killed seven people and hospitalized 31.
