1. Smoked-Salmon Chowder with Corn and Fennel

You can find hot-smoked wild salmon in the refrigerated section of many supermarkets.

2. Orange-Poached Catfish with Confetti Salad

Although catfish can eat corn and soy like cows, they require far less feed than cattle to grow—and unlike cows they don’t emit methane, a major greenhouse gas, during the digestive process. This recipe infuses mild catfish with zesty citrus.

3. Grilled Fish Tacos with Jalapeño Slaw

Spice up sea bass with this taco recipe. Although sea bass were overfished in the past, populations have recently been rebuilt.

4. Salmon al Forno Salad

To make this salad, choose wild Alaskan sockeye salmon, which has the highest levels of omega-3s and lowest levels of mercury and PCBs among salmon. Plus, although sockeye has been overfished in the past, excellent management is in place today.

5. Walnut-Crusted Shrimp with Roasted Red Pepper Dip

To reduce accidentally killed bycatch, choose American and Canadian Pacific spot prawns or Oregon pink shrimp. Like shrimp, walnuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. The baked finish used in this recipe is healthier than fried, and really satisfying.

6. Brazilian Fish Stew

US sablefish, or black cod, is a major population-rebuilding success story, as the fish are now managed under strict quota systems. Plus, they’re rich in heart-healthy omega-3s. If you’re a pescatarian, you can substitute vegetable broth for the chicken broth.
