10 Pieces of Wisdom From Dr. Oliver Sacks

Oliver Sacks, MD, the renowned neurologist and author, passed away Aug. 31 from cancer.

Sacks, who was 82 when he died, was known for his contributions to both medicine and the humanities, particularly his illuminating writings of people with conditions such as autism and Tourette’s syndrome. He wrote a number of books, including The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, An Anthropologist on Mars, and Awakenings.

“He never allowed people to be defined by their deficits,” Steve Silberman, an author whose recent book had a foreword written by Sacks, told The Wall Street Journal. “He had great respect for their special gifts and their humanity at a time when autistic people were regarded as less than fully human.”

In celebration of Sacks’ life, Yahoo Health rounded up some of the doctor’s most poignant words, so that his legacy can live on.
