Bill Walton, the legendary basketball player and sportscaster, died Monday at 71, according to the NBA. The two-time NBA champion -- first for the Portland Trail Blazers in 1977, and then for the Boston Celtics in 1986 -- died of cancer and was surrounded by family, the NBA said. Standing at 6 feet, 11 inches tall, topped off with a mop of red hair and an encyclopedic knowledge of ‘60s counterculture, few athletes have ever stood out as much as Walton -- and that was before he stepped on the basketball court.

Memorial Day weather: Rain along the East Coast and scorching heat in the Gulf
At least 70 million Americans are under severe weather alerts, including flooding, on Memorial Day. Severe weather is expected to move into the East Coast's I-95 corridor, bringing with it damaging winds, hail and maybe even a few tornadoes. There were at least 72 reported tornadoes since Friday in 12 states: Wisconsin, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa, North Dakota and North Carolina.

Scientists may have found the mechanism behind the unusual explosive eruptions seen at one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Kilauea, located at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, experienced at least a dozen instances in 2018 when lava was spewing from the crater like a "stomp-rocket toy," a children's toy that involves launching a rocket into the air after stomping on the release mechanism, according to a paper published Monday in Nature Geosciences. The unusual eruption behavior likely contributed to the severity of that lava flow that year that destroyed more than 600 properties, Josh Crozier, a geologist at Stanford University and lead researcher of the study, told ABC News.

"General Hospital" actor Johnny Wactor, who was known for playing Brando Corbin in the beloved ABC soap opera, died after being shot on Saturday. As tornado season ramps up, more people are turning to private home shelters to survive
When a powerful EF-4 tornado ripped through Greenfield, Iowa, last week, TJ Oder, the chief of the town's volunteer fire department, said his house took a direct hit. Oder said that when the twister struck, he was helping to prepare a triage center to treat injured neighbors and get them to hospitals while his family members were hunkered down in his personal shelter. At least four people were killed and 35 were injured in the Greenfield twister, but throughout the area, many lives were saved due to people being close to a public shelter as the twister bore down or having one like Oder just steps away in their own home, officials said.

Families of five Marines killed in a June 2022 Osprey crash in southern California have filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit, blaming companies that make the aircraft for the tragedy. The lawsuit, filed this week, names Boeing, Rolls Royce and Bell Textron, which are each involved in producing the "tiltrotor" V-22 Osprey, capable of both taking off vertically like a helicopter and flying like an airplane -- by changing the angle of its propellers.
