For months, the Federal Reserve has forecasted interest rate cuts that would deliver much-needed relief for Americans burdened by high mortgage and credit card loans. At a press conference this week, however, Fed Chair Jerome Powell cast doubt on whether those rate cuts would arrive after all, saying the Fed needs to “gain greater confidence” that inflation is headed toward an acceptable level. The prospect of high interest rates for a longer period of time could exacerbate the financial pain already imposed by elevated borrowing costs, making loans expensive even as consumers still weather elevated prices, experts told ABC News.

Former President Donald Trump is on trial in New York City, where he is facing felony charges related to a 2016 hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. 'Violent protest is not protected,' Biden says of college campus unrest
President Joe Biden on Thursday spoke out from the White House on college protests happening across the nation in connection with the Israel-Hamas war. "We've all seen images, and they put to the test two fundamental American principles," Biden said from the Roosevelt Room. A targeted U.S. drone strike in northwest Syria one year ago Friday hit and killed a civilian, not the al-Qaeda leader it was looking for, the Pentagon said after an internal review. "U.S. Central Command acknowledges and regrets the civilian harm that resulted from the airstrike," the combatant command said in a statement after the year-long review. It confirmed the Syrian, Lufti Hasan Masto, "was struck and killed instead" of an intended senior al-Qaeda leader.

The Boone County Sheriff's Office in Burlington, Kentucky, is experiencing a baby boom, with 15 babies born to staffers in the last year. The Kentucky law enforcement agency shared a photo celebrating the new generation of families in a Facebook post April 30, which is quickly going viral with over 2,000 likes. What to know as China attempts to be 1st country to return samples from far side of the moon
China is set to launch the first-ever mission, known as Chang'e 6, on Friday to collect rock and soil samples from the far side of the moon. The lunar lander is scheduled to launch by rocket at 3:50 a.m. ET from the China National Space Administration's (CNSA) Wenchang Satellite Launch Center on the island of Hainan, located to the south of China, according to NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

6 people, including 3-year-old, shot at Fort Worth apartment complex
At least six people ranging between the ages of 3 to 19-years-old have been shot at an apartment complex in Fort Worth, Texas, police say. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening at approximately 7:30 p.m. when the Fort Worth Police Department received a call and responded to a reported shooting at an apartment complex in the 3000 block of Las Vegas Trail in the western part of the city, according to a statement from the Forth Worth Police Department early Thursday morning. Officers immediately assisted in providing medical attention with the help of the Fort Worth Fire Department and MedStar, authorities said.

5th victim's body recovered in Baltimore Key Bridge collapse
The body of a fifth victim of the Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse has been recovered. Authorities said the body of Miguel Angel Luna Gonzalez, 49, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, was recovered on Wednesday. Unified Command salvage teams said its teams had earlier found one of the construction vehicles reported missing when the bridge collapsed in March and notified the Maryland Department of State Police.

US maternal mortality rates fell in 2022 after 3 years of increases: CDC
Maternal mortality rates in the United States fell in 2022 after at least three years of continuous increases, new federal data shows. In 2022, 817 women in the U.S. died of maternal causes with a rate of 22.3 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, according to the report published early Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics. This is a drop from the 1,205 women that died in 2021 with a rate of 32.9 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births.
