World Cup Party: Viva Ecuador!

Ecuador plays France in the World Cup Wednesday at 4 p.m., so you have just enough time to whip up a simple empanada dough, throw together an unctuous pork filling flecked with minced onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and jalapeños, and bake the meat-filled pockets until golden brown.

You could also go the beefier route with this cumin- and oregano-spiced beef filling, flecked with hard-boiled egg and raisins. And poultry freaks can get their bird on with this savory olive-spiked mixture.

But if you have a sweet tooth, opt for a honey-infused dough and fill your empanada with queso fresco, then deep-fry the whole thing and sprinkle the result with sugar.

Chow down between goals, or—if you’re particularly nervous—before the match to settle the butterflies in your stomach.

And if you’re rooting for France, don’t worry—you can enjoy these, too. We won’t tell anyone.
