Where’s the Beef? Americans Try Indian McDonalds Items

If you’re a fan of Indian cuisine, the flavors of aloo tikki and paneer are probably familiar. But what about a McSpicy Paneer or McAloo Tikki? These hybrids are the work of — you guessed it — McDonald’s India, whose offerings mirror the American chain’s fare, with a spicy, veg-centric twist.

Most associate the fast food juggernaut with their iconic beef offerings. However, because over 80 percent of India’s population is Hindu, a religion that reveres cows as a sacred symbol of life that may never be killed, McDonalds India’s offerings are void of bovine.

Alongside familiar offerings such as the McChicken and Filet-o-Fish, there are also some uniquely Indian items on the menu, and flavors worthy of the Spice Route.

In this video, Americans try some of these items — some of which are pleasantly received and others… not so much.

One item in the taste test is the Chicken Maharaja Mac, a variation of the Big Mac with chicken patties and smoky sauce, which one taste tester describes as “American opulence exported to India at its finest.”

Also included are the McAloo Tikki Burger, featuring a potato and peas patty with sweet tomato mayo, and McSpicy Paneer, with a paneer cheese patty and tandoori mayonnaise sauce.

“I feel like McDonald’s India was literally put together by someone just perusing the Wikipedia article for Indian food and putting a ‘Mc’ in front of it,” one taster notes.

The unique McDonalds India menu item not included in the taste test? The veg pizza McPuff — essentially, a pizza hot pocket. Not exactly a quintessential Indian food, but a sure-to-be favorite of munchies-seeking Indians everywhere, we could only assume.
