The winner of this year’s grand prize at the Campionato Mondiale della Pizza (a.k.a. the Pizza World Championship — oh yes, it is a real thing) is Johnny Di Francesco, proprietor of the 400 Gradi pizzeria in (wait for it) a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. Yup. Australia.

"I was happy to get into the top five, so to end up number one is a fantastic achievement for me and also for Australia," he told The Guardian Australia. “It lets the rest of the world know we do produce quality product here in Australia.”

Whether you believe it or not, a win is a win — and, according to Di Francesco, the secret lies in the ingredients.

"People underestimate the margherita," he told the paper. "They think it’s the easiest pizzas to make, but it’s one of the hardest. Because it has so few ingredients, you can taste the quality of the dough used."
