The Best Doughnut in America, According to Math

From glazed to filled to regular ol’ cake varieties, “people are really enthusiastic about doughnuts,” said Hilary Mason, a data scientist and the founder of research firm Fast Forward Labs. But what is the ultimate doughnut — and where can it be found?

Mason, one of the preeminent data scientists in the country, uses quantitative analysis to determine the most popular doughnut in the country in this video for Bon Appetit.

By analyzing a doughnut’s popularity by frequency of mention in consumer reviews, Mason found the most popular variety of the round dough treats, and determined where the best doughnuts are sold (hint: they’re not in Los Angeles).

Watch the video to see Mason’s findings, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself craving a chocolate glazed doughnut afterwards.
