Our Favorite #CandyBands

In what’s got to be our favorite food meme since Hot Dog Legs and Selleck Waterfall Sandwich, #candybands is taking the internet by (sugary, hyped-up) storm.

It’s a pretty mesmerizing meme and one that we initially thought originated with the good folks at the Comedy Central show @midnight. Using the example of Hershey’s KISS—a heavily makeup-ed, chocolate-loving American rock band?!—the host delivered the #candybands challenge, and his guests, all comics, took it away.

Weird Al Yankovic, whose brain is basically built for this sort of thing, quickly trounced the other two comics by proffering Eminems, The Pixies Stix, Almond Joy Division, and Three Muske-Tears for Fears right off the bat. (Oh, to have such a brain!)

Soon, as is true of all things, Twitter followed suit. Below, a few of our favorite #candybands, encompassing hip-hop, rock, classic R&B, jam bands, metal and category-defying New Kids on the Block (who are terrifyingly all grown up).

But lo, lest we credit Comedy Central for the invention of a meme, we should note that (as always) the Internet came first. The oldest tweet we found with the hashtag #candybands dates back to July of last year, when the brilliant @jukeboxtheghost tweeted:

Props to you, Jukebox. We only wish we had some sort of rock ‘n roll candy prize to give you…
