November's Best-Selling Cookbooks: Ina's Back on Top

Ina Garten’s Make It Ahead is the best-selling cookbook on Amazon.com for the second time in three months.

Among Amazon’s top-selling print cookbooks for the month of November are a few familiar faces: Ina Garten. Thug Kitchen’s Michelle Davis and Matt Holloway. Against All Grain's Danielle Walker. Gina Homolka of Skinnytaste.

What’s to thank for these repeat all-stars? The looming holiday season probably has something to do with it, especially since this month’s figures include the feat of capitalistic endurance that is Black Friday. What better stocking stuffer than a collection of recipes by Gabrielle Hamilton of New York City’s modern American restaurant, Prune? Or perhaps the latest cookbook from Middle Eastern-inflected favorite Yotam Ottolenghi, Plenty More?

And although Ms. Garten is missing from the hits list at Book Larder, a popular Seattle cookbook store, both Hamilton’s and Ottolenghi’s selections make cameos on the best-seller roster.

"We held two sold-out dinners with Gabrielle Hamilton at The Walrus & The Carpenter,” a famed local oyster bar, explained the shop’s owner, Lara Hamilton (no relation), over email. “She has a big following [here], as her unfussy, rustic approach to food resonates in casual Seattle.”

Perhaps the homey cuisine featured in Plenty More had something to do with its success at Book Larder, too, although Hamilton doesn’t think Ottolenghi’s star power hurt. “No surprise that the follow up to Ottolenghi’s incredibly popular Plenty is a best seller,” she wrote. “I expect it to stay on this list for a long time.”

But the honor for top title at Book Larder this month goes to Mario Batali’s American Farm to Table. The Italian chef (and Seattle native) packed in a full house at an event hosted by the shop in early November, which Hamilton says “pushed Batali’s latest to the top.”
