Make Your Own BBQ Sauce — With Just 2 Ingredients

This recipe for two-ingredient BBQ sauce was sent to me via an Impatient Foodie follower on our FB page. I have to admit that when I first read it, I was skeptical. But, I knew that if it actually worked, it would be a game-changer. So, I decided to turn our last Impatient Foodie shoot into a test kitchen to find out: What’s the deal with this strange-sounding sauce?

It turns out, if you have ketchup, Coke (or almost any other soda, for that matter), and chicken in your fridge, you’re about 40 minutes away from a BBQ meal. I wouldn’t say it’s as good as something like Bone Suckin’ Sauce, but with some BBQ sauces going for around $12 a bottle, this is definitely a solid, less-expensive alternative. I would recommend adding some Tabasco to it, even if you’re not big on heat (just a touch adds a nice layer of taste to the sauce).

The woman who sent this to me added that she likes to serve this with rice and green beans (sautéed in olive oil with a few sesame seeds) on the side. She also said, “You can even use skinless, boneless chicken breasts (sliced) and cook covered in a crockpot all day (four hours or more) to make a tasty BBQ chicken sandwich.” Sounds amazing.

2-Ingredient Soda-BBQ Sauce

Ingredients
For the sauce:
1 cup Heinz ketchup
1 cup Coke, Dr. Pepper, Sprite, or 7UP (see note below)

For the chicken:
4 chicken breasts
Tabasco sauce (optional)
Salt & pepper

Instructions
1. Place equal parts soda and ketchup into a skillet (for thicker sauce, use up to ¼ more ketchup) Varying the type of soda used can give you different — wonderful — results.

(NOTE: You can use caffeinated or uncaffeinated sodas, but not diet. Sprite/7UP makes a lighter, summery, and mildly citrus-y sauce. Dr. Pepper gives a sweeter and slightly spicier sauce.)

2. Add raw chicken and turn in sauce to coat completely.

3. Slow-simmer, uncovered, for 40 minutes, turning once at the halfway mark.

4. Add Tabasco, salt, and pepper to taste, and serve.
