Your dishwasher isn’t just helpful for cleaning up after a meal — it can help you make one, too.

PopSugar tested out dishwasher recipes to see if it they really worked. Most dishwashers reach temperatures of about 145 degrees, which is similar to sous vide, a French technique, where food in vacuum-sealed bags is immersed in water around 131 to 140 degrees and slow cooked to seal in juices.

For the PopSugar test, Brandi Milloy picks foods she thinks will fare well at lower temperatures such as poached shrimp, which home cooks can tell have cooked through because they turn opaque, and vegetables and fruits that are already a bit tender on their own.

The key is using airtight containers, like Mason jars, to keep out all that swirling soapy water.
