Deadline Nears In $1 Million Lay's Chip Contest: Liver, Fish, and Haggis Gaining Steam

Time is running out for a chance to join the pantheon of potato chip royalty and win a cool $1 million along the way.

That’s right, the deadline for Lay’s “Do Us A Flavor” contest ends exactly one second before midnight (CST), Monday, March 30. Right now, flavors such as haggis, liver, fish, and seaweed are gaining pre-deadline popularity throughout the country.

Think you can do better? We know you can. Check out the rules and don’t forget to scribble down the name of the state where you dreamt up your most flavorful inspiration, all in keeping with the contest’s “Tastes of America” theme.

Remember that submissions can’t be the same or significantly similar to the finalists of the last two contests: Chicken & Waffles; Sriracha; Cappuccino; Mango Salsa; Cheddar Bacon Mac N Cheese; 2012 champ Cheesy Garlic Bread; or last year’s winner, Wasabi Ginger.

We suggest you stay away from coffee flavors. Photo: Lay’s

You might also want to stay clear of any coffee-related flavors, considering how nasty last year’s Cappuccino tasted to the majority of bloggers, snack food fans and pretty much the rest of the online community. (One critic dished about just how bad it was!)

So choose up to three ingredients—in Classic, Wavy, or Kettle Cooked varieties—for your flavor, and make each ingredient count: Competition is tough. Last year’s contest drew more than 14 million submissions, and this year’s promises even more.

As was true in previous years, a panel of foodies, chefs and other experts will choose four flavors that Lay’s will cook up and distribute to stores this summer. Starting August 10, the public gets to vote for their favorite. The one with the most votes by October 17 wins the $1 million or 1% of net sales, whichever number is higher for a year, beginning July 15, and the three runner-up finalists take home $50,000 each.
