Cookbook of the Week: 'Brown Eggs and Jam Jars'

Yahoo Food’s Cookbook of the Week: Brown Eggs and Jam Jars (Pintail/Penguin Group) by Aimée Wimbush-Bourque, of the popular food blog Simple Bites. In it, Wimbush-Bourque shares seasonal recipes for the family-minded home cook, as well as tips for cooking with kids (and feeding the picky ones).

Noteworthy: The book contains a section on how to “greenover” your kitchen, from making sustainable food choices to being more energy-wise. “[W]e recycle constantly, compost enthusiastically, and choose seasonal produce most of the time,” Wimbush-Bourque writes. “Nevertheless, there is always so much more we can do to be environmentally aware, and we continue to challenge ourselves to do better.”

The Team: Wimbush-Bourque, who lives outside of Montreal, Quebec, with her husband, three children, two cats, and six hens. Saveur magazine named her Simple Bites the Best Kids’ Cooking Blog in 2013. Montreal photographers Tim and Angela Chin are responsible for the I-want-this-life images in the book.

The Cuisine: There’s a touch of nostalgia to Wimbush-Bourque’s recipes; you’ll find things like her mother’s Maple Pecan Butter Tarts and spiced hot cocoa. They’re “inspired by the seasons and the joyous events they bring,” she writes. That means hearty, meaty dishes in the winter, herb-heavy picnic foods in the spring, stone fruits and summer squash for late-summer suppers, and fall ciders and soups.

Who Should Buy It: Those who dream of a rural life. While she grew up in the countryside herding goats and sorting eggs, Wimbush-Bourque now finds a way to homestead on just the third of an acre she calls home. “[M]any of the simple joys I had experienced as a child in the country could be reproduced in an urban home,” she writes. “What was stopping me from introducing the country girl to city life?”

Must-Make Recipes: Maple Pepper Glazed Pork Chops, Homestead Homemade Yogurt, and Maple Pumpkin Chili.
