“We’d love for you to spend an afternoon gazing on our gorgeous cherry blossom tree with us. Please come by for a pink tree, pink wines and some pink snacks.”
That’s the only excuse you need to throw a party, really, according to photographer Michael Harlan Turkell and Food & Wine magazine senior wine editor Megan Krigbaum. Every year towards the end of April, the cherry tree in their Brooklyn backyard sprouts silky little bundles of pink, and every year they decide to run with the theme.
“Who doesn’t like pink wine?” says Turkell. “The tree opens up right around the time the wines are released; it’s that perfect collision.”
Other pink items follow: radish toasts with a sumac compound butter, sockeye salmon cured in Lior Lev Sercarz’s honey-saffron salt, beet hummus, prosciutto, and a strawberry pavlova. And Turkell’s “one pink shirt that I wear every year.”
“You know what a sip and see is?” Turkell asked of the Southern tea-sipping and newborn baby-viewing tradition. “‘Pink Tree Sip and See’ just kind of rolled off the tongue. Plus Megan is a radish fanatic. Any way she can incorporate that into a meal or a party, she will.”
