Cake of the Day: Buttermilk Cake with Strawberry Buttercream Frosting

Today’s cake comes from Sarah Kieffer of the popular baking site, The Vanilla Bean Blog. That’s earned a Saveur blog award for best baking and desserts. Kieffer has also been one of our Bloggers of the Week, a contributor on Food52, and is currently working on first cookbook. It’s due out in 2016. That explains why she’s been recipe testing a storm of cakes, which brings us to this gorgeous number.
The batter, which calls for buttermilk and sour cream, makes the cake tender and tangy. Three tiers of cake are layered with her go-to rhubarb buttercream recipe. For this cake, she swaps strawberries in place of the rhubarb. Lastly, Kieffer frosts the outside with a thin layer of the remaining butter cream and decorates the top with lovely flowers from her garden. Make the most of strawberry season with this stunning dessert!
