Aspiring Chef Lives in the Tiniest Apartment Ever
If you’re moving to the Big Apple with little else but big dreams — which is to say, you’re poor — finding suitable housing at an affordable price can be a tall order. That’s the situation aspiring chef Grayson Altenberg found himself in when he arrived from Wisconsin to work at Lincoln Ristorante, an Italian-inflected restaurant at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts that snagged a coveted spot in the 2014 Michelin Guide.
Fortunately, he came across a listing for a $1,100-a-month Manhattan apartment that fit snugly into his budget and was located an easy five-minute walk from the restaurant. Unfortunately, the place was the size of a walk-in closet. Literally.
At just 100 square feet, the minuscule apartment has just enough room for a twin bed, shower (squished right next to the bed!), and some shelves. There’s no kitchen or stove, which might seem ironic considering its current tenant’s profession. But, as Altenberg points out, "I also have a very, very giant kitchen at Lincoln Center.”
That’s a good attitude, we suppose. Still, the Village Voice’s video tour of Altenberg’s apartment is not suitable for those prone to claustrophobia. In fact, it’ll probably make anyone who enjoys a modicum of personal space squirm.
