A Few Things to Know About Molly Yeh

It’s hard to believe it’s already been five days of recipes and tales from our Blogger of the Week, Molly Yeh of My Name Is Yeh. We can’t get enough of the inventive dishes that riff on her Chinese and Jewish heritage, from Brussels sprout latkes to scallion pancake challah. Both go to show that even the most traditional dishes can afford a makeover once in awhile. (Her modern take on Funfetti cake is a ton of fun, too.)

But though we’ve learned a lot about Yeh—about her days studying percussion at Juilliard and her brave move from bustling New York City to a remote farm in North Dakota—we still had a few burning questions. Such as: “What’s the oldest thing in your kitchen?” and “Gelato or ice cream?”

Yeh’s answers don’t disappoint. Here they are:

Kitchen “sin” for which you won’t apologize:
Five second rule.

Go-to kitchen utensil:
Red rubber spatula.

Most underappreciated ingredient, in your opinion:
Marzipan.

Culinary “eureka!” moment:
If you eff up a cake, just turn it into a trifle!

Splurgiest kitchen purchase:
2.9 pounds of naturally-dyed sprinkles.

You’re about to bite the big one. What’s your last supper?
Mac and cheese, maybe deep-fried.

Proudest food moment:
When I sliced into my final Funfetti cake and the sprinkles were nicely and evenly dispersed.

Kitchen skill you want to learn:
The art of hotdish.

Ice cream or gelato?
Either, as long as it’s pistachio.

Caramel or hot fudge?
Caramel, pronounced “kar-ə-məl.” Everybody in my new town pronounces it the other way, and it makes me so mad I could spit!

Vanilla or chocolate?
Darrrrrk chocolate.

Hamburger or hot dog?
Gray’s Papaya if I’m drunk, Superdawg if I’m not.

Cheese or pepperoni pizza?
DEEP DISH.

Cookbooks or food blogs?
This is a silly question!

Worst kitchen blunder you wish you could undo:
I overcooked some elk the other day.

Ingredient that you just can’t stand:
Mushrooms. I wish I could stand them. I really do.

You can only eat one type of cuisine for the rest of your life. What is it?
Israeli.

City with the best food scene:
New York for everything, Chicago for pizza and hot dogs and Mexican food, Hong Kong for dumplings, San Francisco for that muffin thing with the soft boiled egg inside (and a lot of other things)!

Dream vacation spot (for eating, of course):
I really want to go to Fäviken, wayyyy up north in Sweden. I wanted to go there for our honeymoon but [my fiancé] put the kibosh on it for fear that there wouldn’t be enough sunlight there during the winter. So we decided on a schnitzel tour of Austria, and I am mega excited.

Oldest thing in your kitchen right now:
Some handmade lefse sticks that are a few generations old.
