Zendaya Wore Two Entirely Different Met Gala Looks Back to Back

Zendaya never met a red carpet she didn't shut down, so to say we were waiting for her 2024 Met Gala look with bated breath is the understatement of the century. The star is fresh off a white-hot fashion run promoting both Dune: Part Two and Challengers, but to co-chair the Gala, she swapped the futuristic suits and tennis gear in favor of a vintage-inspired glam and dramatic one-shoulder Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano gown for the Gala, looking like she stepped right out of a literary art salon in Paris circa the 1920s. (One with a fabulous garden, at that.) And as if that weren't enough, she changed again shortly before the party!

Because she wore a netted fascinator hat for her first ensemble, her hair was kept simple, pulled back into a classic knot at the back of her head. Her makeup, however, was the complete opposite — it was all about the drama, transforming the star into a decadent socialite from the 1920s. Her brows were either hidden or bleached entirely, then drawn on in skinny, pencil-thin arches above a gradient red eye, with color diffused all the way up to the brows. Tons of thick black eyeliner on her upper and lower lashlines, including her waterlines, made her eyes smolder even more.

The Challengers star mimicked the same blood red shade on her lips with a glossy, deep burgundy shade, then carried the same color through to her short eggplant manicure—a gorgeous contrast against the sapphire blues and emerald greens of her billowing, garden goddess gown and the little bird swooping across her neck.

Hairstylist Ursula Stephen, who worked with Zendaya during the Challengers press run, created the star's Gala bun. “The inspiration behind Zendaya's Met look is subtle beauty. Very delicate. Very confident," Stephen told Allure, adding that the team started prep in March during the international Challengers press tour. Stephen used Living Proof products on the actor for the event, prepping with Triple Bond Complex before blowing the hair dry, then adding the 5-in-1 Styling Treatment. She gathered Zendaya's hair into a low bun and secured with a hair tie, the twisted and pinned into shape; Stephen says was inspired by a calla lily. Stephen tousled the top layer of hair and curled any flyaways for an “angelic finish," then held the entire look in place with Living Proof's Flex Hairspray.

For her second look of the night, Zendaya and her glam team pulled off a total feat, removing the red shadow and liner in favor of a subtler glam of peachy tones, though the skinny, bleached brows stayed in place. (Seriously, how did they do that? Did they just run to the Met bathroom with a big bottle of makeup remover?) The fascinator hat was gone, replaced by an entire bouquet hat atop her head, with the stems tilted up at a jaunty angle and a handful of roses cupping Zendaya's face. Her second gown was a black Victorian off-the-shoulder Givenchy gown from the '90s with a corseted bodice and long, dramatic train. If anyone can convince us to put a goth spin on spring beauty, it's Zendaya.
