You Won’t Believe What Delicacy Foodies Are Bugging Out About in Virginia

Andrew Zimmern traveled all over the world on Tuesday’s episode of Bizarre Foods to find people who eat insects as a part of their normal diet. Since insects are high in protein, low in fat, and the world’s most abundant food source, Andrew believes that they are the answer to a lot of problems in today’s world.

Andrew’s travels brought him to Richmond, Va., where people are taking advantage of an insect that comes out in droves every 17 years. Billions of cicadas annually emerge from under the ground to mate, lay eggs, and then die within a few weeks.

Pasture restaurant, in Richmond, serves them to customers. The chef says, “After we remove the legs and wings, we blanch them to remove any bacteria, soak them in buttermilk, and dredge them in a combination of rice and wheat flour.”

Everyone seemed to really enjoy the fried cicadas — even the kids, who said, “They’re like eating french fries.”

Bizarre Foods airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on Travel Channel.
