Women take center stage at the SAG Awards

Women took center stage at the Screen Actors Guild Awards as Kristen Bell became the first person to host the ceremonies. In support of the #TimesUp and #MeToo movements, all of the opening “I am an actor” introductions were by women, and throughout the show all of the award presenters were women.

During her opening monologue, Bell said, “We are living in a watershed moment in time, and as we march forward with active momentum and open ears, let’s make sure we are leading the charge with empathy and diligence, because fear and anger never win the race.”

When Nicole Kidman received the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series, she took a moment to thank female trailblazers like Meryl Streep and Judi Dench for proving that films starring more mature women are still viable and relevant.

Kidman said, “How wonderful it is that our careers today can go beyond 40 years old. Twenty years ago, we were pretty washed up by this stage in our lives, so that’s not the case now. We have proven—and these actresses and so many more are proving—that we are potent and powerful and viable.”

And when Morgan Freeman was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award, he took the moment to call out the show’s coveted award known as “the Actor.” He said, “I wasn’t going to do this. I’m going to tell you what is wrong with this statue. It works from the back. From the front, it’s gender-specific. Maybe I started something?”
