Why singers Matt & Kim didn't tell fans that they were in a relationship

You’ve likely heard of Matt and Kim as the talented duo behind the 2008 hit “Daylight.” But what you probably don’t know about them is their captivating love story. Years before the two began creating music together, Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino were establishing themselves as a couple after a chance meeting outside of the silk-screen studio at their alma mater, Pratt Institute, in Brooklyn. Although Schifino had just graduated, she tells Yahoo Lifestyle that she still hung around campus, which turned out to be fortuitous, considering that it led her to lay eyes on Johnson for the first time. “You were making some moves, and I was very scared,” Johnson admits of their first encounters. “And then we had mutual friends, and then we were kinda friends for a second. And then, like in a month, we were moved in together.” It turns out that the pair’s private whirlwind romance was never as difficult as sharing their relationship with their fans became down the road. “For a while, we wouldn’t bring up the relationship. We would always think, like, does anyone want to go see a couple together on stage? Like, that’s so disgusting,” Schifino jokes. It wasn’t until their fifth album, New Glow, that they even addressed their coupling in a song. “We felt like it wasn’t being honest not talking about our relationship,” Schifino admits, “because it’s a huge part of us.” Soon enough, it became a huge part of their work as well. “We had a new perspective to write from,” Johnson says about their latest album, which they say is their most honest album yet, with upbeat hits such as “Happy If You’re Happy.” These latest tracks can be heard on their current tour.
