WNBA star Brittney Griner is opening up for the first time about her experience spending nearly 10 months in a Russian prison for a new 20/20 special airing tonight on ABC and streaming on Hulu.
Airing tonight, the nine-time women’s basketball icon will tell her story on TV for the first time with ABC News’ Robin Roberts for 20/20: Prisoner of Russia, a one-hour special ahead of the release of her book, Coming Home on May 7. Griner will share more about her experience with the sudden detainment days ahead of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, how she survived the ordeal, and her work with the nonprofit Bring Our Families Home.
“My life is over right here,” Griner recalled in the special’s preview, reflecting on the pivotal moment in February 2022 when two cannabis vape cartridges were discovered in her carry-on luggage at a Russian airport. The Phoenix Mercury player was there to play with the Russian Premier League during the WNBA off-season but never made it on-court, and was sentenced to nine years in a Russian penal colony. Griner was freed in a one-for-one prisoner swap for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout in December 2022.
