Spring has sprung, prom is fast approaching, and Hulu knows it well. In time for prom season, the streamer is unveiling the first trailer for Prom Dates, starring Antonia Gentry (Ginny & Georgia) and Julia Lester (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series), and, boy, we are in for a treat.
Written by D.J. Mausner and directed by Kim O. Nguyen (whose name you might recognize from Never Have I Ever), Prom Dates is an upcoming teen comedy that follows the story of two best friends, Jess (Gentry) and Hannah (Lester), who, at 13, make a pact to have the perfect prom no matter what. It is all going according to plan until only 24 hours before prom when they both break up with their dates, which leaves them with less than a date to find a new person to take to prom and fulfill their promise.
Previously, Hulu had unveiled clips giving viewers a glimpse at the details of Jess and Hanna’s prom pact as well as a hilarious and over-the-top promposal, but the first official trailer, unveiled exclusively by Teen Vogue, really takes things up a notch.
In the trailer, which you can watch above, we see how Jess and Hannah break up with their respective boyfriends, Luca (Jordan Buhat) and Greg (Kenny Ridwan), the mastermind before the aforementioned promposal. Why do they break up 24 hours before prom? Good question; the answer is for very different reasons: Luca is a cheater, and Greg is, well, a man.
After the mutual breakups and the realization that they only have a day to find new dates, a series of hijinks ensue aided by a supporting cast that includes Zión Moreno (Gossip Girl), Terry Hu (Never Have I Ever), John Michael Higgins (Licorice Pizza), Emery Kelly (Alexa & Katie), and JT Neal (Sierra Burgess Is a Loser), as well as John Michael Higgins and comedian Chelsea Handler.
To accompany the release of the official trailer, Hulu has also unveiled the key art poster for the movie, which you can see below, featuring Antonia Gentry and Julia Lester with the tagline: “Prom Dates… they just can’t get any.” Well, we’ll see about that when Prom Dates premieres on Hulu on May 3, 2024.
