Warren Beatty Returns as Howard Hughes Alongside Alden Ehrenreich, Lily Collins in First 'Rules Don't Apply' Trailer

After a 15-year hiatus from acting — and an 18-year break from directing — Hollywood legend Warren Beatty returns to do both in this fall’s Rules Don’t Apply, a based-on-real-events love story about two young Hollywood strangers whose relationship becomes inextricably knotted up with eccentric millionaire movie mogul Howard Hughes. And now, a month after debuting snapshots from its production, it’s delivered its first trailer (watch it above).

In Rules Don’t Apply, Beatty is Hughes, who sets about trying to launch the career of a young good-girl Baptist actress named Marla (Lily Collins). Things get messy, however, when she breaks Hughes’ golden rule — don’t date employees — by clicking with her Methodist driver Frank (Hail, Caesar!’s Alden Ehrenreich, soon to be seen as the young Han Solo). On the basis of its first tease, which unfortunately reveals that the film is going to repeatedly have characters state its title during the action, that set-up will lead to madcap humor, much of it from Beatty as the reclusive Hughes, whose notorious hang-ups and quirks apparently will be treated as fodder for some lighthearted comedy to go alongside the couple’s against-the-grain romance.

With a cast that includes Beatty’s wife Annette Bening, Alec Baldwin, Haley Bennett, Candice Bergen, Matthew Broderick, Steve Coogan, Ed Harris, Megan Hilty, Oliver Platt, and Martin Sheen — all of whom make blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearances at the end of its maiden promo — Rules Don’t Apply will be loaded with old-fashioned Hollywood star power when it hits theaters on Nov. 23.
