How to Unclog a Shower Drain Naturally

Store-bought drain cleaner can seem like a godsend when you're ankle deep in gross, dirty water. But, as any plumber will tell you, all those chemicals can take a toll on pipes. So before you bring in the big guns, try this two-step DIY trick.

What you need: A screwdriver, a plastic zip tie, scissors, white vinegar, baking soda and a washcloth.

How to unclog a shower drain naturally:

Step 1: Remove the drain cover with the screwdriver.

Step 2: Get any initial gunk out with your fingers. (Rubber gloves, people.)

Step 3: Use the scissors to cut notches in the plastic zip tie, then insert the zip tie into the drain and flick your wrist to catch hair. Pull it out, get grossed out and repeat the process until you come back with a clean zip tie. (Psst... you can also buy a FlexiSnake for $5 that will do this for you.)

Step 4: Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain, follow it up with 1/2 cup of white vinegar and cover the drain with a wet washcloth. Let it bubble for ten minutes. Remove the washcloth and rinse the drain with boiling-hot water.

Step 5: Replace the drain cover.

Take a long, steamy shower-you’ve earned it!
